‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle should be strategically and consciously acted on’

Meriema, April 22 (MExN): The office of Students’ Welfare, Nagaland University, in partnership with Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Nagaland (Kohima Division) celebrated Earth Day on April 22 at the Ladies Common Room, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema.

On the theme of Earth Day 2024, “Planet vs. Plastics,” Chisayi Vadeo, DFO, Kohima Forest Division, Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, addressed the gathering on the historical foundation of World Earth Day, which began as a movement concerned with environmental issues and awareness in the 1970s. 

Vadeo emphasised on the urgent need to act on the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), which needs to be strategically and consciously acted on. He emphasised an environmentally friendly lifestyles to live a healthier life. He further stressed on the importance of collective, sustainable, strong, and significant efforts as responsible citizens.

To mark the occasion, and in line with the theme, T-shirt design and Recycled Craft Competitions were also held. The results were declared during the program, and prizes were presented to the winners and participants. A quiz competition was also held where members of the gathering participated actively and respondents were given prizes. A total of 300 plant saplings were donated to the NUKC for a plantation drive on the campus.

Earlier, Prof GT Thong, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NUKC remarked on the reasons for awareness creation on pollution and emphasised on environmental education, which should be a continuous effort.

The programme was chaired by Chingshau C Phom, President, NU Students’ Union and vote of thanks was proposed by Hiketo Sumi Wotsa, Convenor of NU Research Scholars’ Forum. The event witnessed participation from staff from Kohima Forest Division, faculties, non-teaching staff, Research scholars, and students of the NUKC community.
