The teachers of Government Middle School Station-1 in Tuensang have come together to construct the drainage in their school campus. On September 23 and 24, altogether 26 teachers of GMS Station-1 Tuensang pooled in money for the drainage construction around the school and within the campus. Around Rs 40,000 was raised to construct more than 100 feet of drainage system. Along with 3 hired laborers, the teachers worked from morning till evening.
“There’s body ache, since we don’t do such manual labors,” stated one of the teachers.

On the second day, heavy downpour of rain washed away most of the cement plasters. However, the spirit of the teachers was not dampened as they started repairing the damage caused by the rain.

Tsalito Sangtam, Teacher In-charge of GMS Station-1 informed that “since last 6 years there was a need of proper drainage system within the school campus but due to lack of financial resources, we could not get it done.” “We waited for last 2 to 3 years for any financial help but we didn’t get,” Tsalito said.

The teachers held a consultative meeting on September 10 which resolved to raise money in order to construct a proper drainage system in the school.

“We resolved in the meeting that we need a proper drainage so that we may have a clean environment. In that way we discussed about the resources and seeing the limited resources we decided to collect few amounts within ourselves and do away with the drainage construction,” Tsalito added.

They formed a committee led by Benjong Nungsang Chang, Graduate Teacher and the construction of the drainage was initiated.

“When I see the contribution and initiative being taken by our esteemed colleagues I was impressed. It was through their dedication we could construct it without having problem and difficulties,” Tsalito viewed.

He encouraged other government schools and teachers to come together for such collective and positive approach.

“If we could come together; why we should only look for someone to help us? If we have a real mind to serve our community, why don’t we come forward and contribute ourselves to do something better for our community that would create a beautiful community as well as a beautiful ambience as we go on,” he added.

The school teachers had also painted the walls of the classrooms and the staffroom in the previous month. This too was done through contributions from amongst themselves.
