The people of Asukhomi Old Village in Zunheboto district celebrated the bicentennial jubilee of the village with the message of ‘Honouring the Past, Envisioning the Future’ on March 6.

On the occasion, Nagaland Advisor for School Education KT Sukhalu stated that the Sumis who were earlier labelled as ‘warriors’ should become ‘warriors in education’ in the contemporary era.

Contrary to the Sumi tribe being known as a ‘forward tribe,’ Sukhalu said the Sumis are now lagging behind other communities in the field of education and that they should try to catch up with the others. Having said this, he however noted that Asukhomi village is a lot more advanced in the field of education than other places in Zunheboto block and as such, called on the villagers to be torch bearers in creating opportunities for their educated unemployed.

He also urged the students to never forget their village no matter where they go for studies. Lamenting that there are many students who are studying just for the sake of studying without any ambitions, he advised them to set goals and work towards fulfilling them.

Dwelling on the topic of education, the Advisor said that the government has been trying not to downgrade government schools. However, there has been significant decrease in enrolment of students because of which schools are being downgraded and the teachers are being posted to other schools where there is shortage of teachers. On this connection, he asked the villagers and the public leaders of Zunheboto district to support the schools and ensure that there is sufficient enrolment of students. He also asked them to keep checks and balances to ensure that teachers are performing their duties well.

The Advisor also informed that there are only 92 language teachers in Nagaland and that to preserve Naga culture, customs, and languages, the government is doing its best to create jobs for language teachers. On this, he said that the school education department has vacancies for Hindi, Maths and Physics teachers for which job advertisements would be placed. However the eligibility criteria will be graduates in particular disciplines with Diploma in Elementary Education for primary teachers and B.Ed for graduate teachers, he added.

Meanwhile, Pastor of Asukhomi Baptist Church Benito Zhimo spoke on the theme of honouring the past and envisioning the future, by drawing parallels between the lives of Israelites under the Egyptians and how Moses rescued them.

Noting that there are instances in the Bible when people forgave each other during jubilees, he called on the villagers to propagate the same and become peacemakers.

Earlier, the jubilee monolith was unveiled by Advisor Sukhalu and dedicated by Vishiho Shohe, Pastor, SBC Dimapur.
