Nkio-Lui Council, NSU reaffirm to honour traditional land boundaries

Peren, March 5 (MExN): The Nkio-Lui Council, the apex body of 11 satellite villages of Nkio territorial jurisdictions, along with Nkio Students’ Union (NSU) held a consultative meeting cum general election of Nkio-Lui Council at New Nkio Chairman’s residence, New Nkio on March 1.

A joint statement issued by Nkio-Lui Council Chairman Akubo and General Secretary, Kunamyi Neimi and NSU President, Dr Pauzieleubo and General Secretary, Obed Ngame stated that after thorough discussion and deliberation, the house unanimously resolved to “continue unflinchingly protect and honor traditional land boundaries and further reaffirmed to tenaciously uphold and abide by the July 29, 2012 resolution No.2 (b) &(c) as it has been honoring since then.”

The July 29, 2012 resolution states that “Nkio Pumling Council (Now Nkio-Lui Council) strictly prohibits unauthorized selling of land by any individual (s) or group (s) within Nkio jurisdiction and asserts to resort punitive action against the defaulter; and any individual (s) or group (s), in the past or the days to come, without the knowledge or consent of Nkio Pumling Council, indulging themselves is such illegal selling of land shall remain unacceptable and void.”

According to the joint statement, the resolution was an irrevocable and ex-post-facto resolution that is solely made to protect and preserve its land from rampant unauthorized selling of land by some few avaricious and impersonating leaders and also to completely put a stop to such intolerable and illicit activities. “The resolution is highly honored and revered by the people, and any individual or group involved in such non-conforming and illegal acts the matters shall be between the buyer and seller of their imaginary land and they themselves will be solely held responsible for any consequences,” it said. 

It added that the People of Nkio highly cherish and venerate our ancestral land since time immemorial and even an iota of land would not let to be easily traded off by irresponsible and rapacious individuals. However, no matter what it takes the people of Nkio will defend and protect our blood-bought ancestral land from encroachers and perpetrators. 

Further, it resolved to completely quash any kind of new agreement, particularly timber operation and logging within Nkio territorial jurisdiction. It also resolved to completely prohibit hunting and poaching during the breeding season- from April to September, and warn outsiders who make a regular visit for hunting during off and on season, if caught, stringent action shall be taken against the perpetrators.  

For the term 2022-2025, Akubo and Kunamyi Neimi were re-elected as the Chairman and Secretary of Nkio-Lui council and few members were added as executives. 

The meeting was attended by Nkio Students’ Union executives, Chairmans, Goanburas, Church leaders, and elders of the satellite villages.
