Teacher shortage at GMS Ikiesingram; Department urged to redeploy teachers

Peren, June 21 (MExN): The Government Middle School (GMS) at Ikiesingram village under Peren district which has an enrolment of 100 students has been functioning with only 5 teachers, after the ‘rationalisation’ exercise undertaken by the Department of School Education earlier in March this year.

In this connection, the Ikiesingram Students’ Union, Ikiesingram Village Council, School Management Committee (SMC), and the Parent-Teacher Association issued a joint statement on Tuesday, expressing dismay over the transfer of teachers and shortage of teaching faculty in the GMS and urged the education department to take corrective measures.

Stating that it is not a good sign of progress and immensely affects the students in the teaching-learning process, it also pointed out that Ikiesingram is a centre of education for the neighboring villages as GMS Ikiesingram is the only centre upgraded to Middle School level.

Elaborating on the situation, the organisations stated that during the rationalisation exercise, an English subject teacher was sent to the GMS in replacement of a Social Science subject teacher, resulting in the School having two English teachers. However, in lieu of this, the then English teacher was re-deployed to another school without any prior intimidation to the School Management Committee.

It further stated that more transfer orders of teachers had been issued without replacement instead of increasing the strength of teachers, while pointing out that in the rationalisation exercise order, a Science teacher was “redeployed against the terminated science teacher (order no. ED/PD-MISC/2019) but was again retained by the same school at Lalong.”

Towards this, it maintained that the “assurance by school department to send a Science teacher is yet to see the light of the day,” and as such, GMS Ikiesingram is facing acute shortage of teachers for major subjects.

Urging the concerned department to redeploy teachers without delay against the post of Science and Social Science teacher at the GMS Ikiesingram, the statement informed that the organisations, in a joint meeting, resolved not to issue No Objection Certificates (NOC) to relieve any of the teachers posted at GMS Ikiesingram “as per the VEC Act 2002” unless the department re-deploys more teachers in the best interest of the students and the community.

“The student community is robbed of several opportunities leaving negative impact in attaining effective and quality education; hence we appeal the education department to immediately address the grievances and issues pertaining to the school,” the statement read.
