All GoI department websites to follow guidelines

Dimapur, August 25 (MExN): The Government of India has informed that the National Informatics Centre has developed guidelines for development and management of government websites which have also been adopted by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances. In an order issued by K. M Chandrasekhar, Cabinet Secretary, New Delhi, it requested all Chief Secretaries to take action to update its Departments websites and comply with the given guidelines. It was also suggested that a senior level officer in each of the department of the state may be designated as “Web Information Leader” to ensure up-to-date and high quality content on the website as well as timely response/action on the feedback/queries received through the websites. 

The move follows after concerns have been raised by individuals citizens and media about the quality of Government websites and their usability, design, accessibility, quality and currency of content, though there are a few Government websites doing very well on the above parameters. 

A separate order, addressed to all Secretaries, Government of India, requested to refer to office D.O No R-4526/Secy (DIT) /09 dated 17.9.2009 regarding the same subject. The order also stated that all Government websites shall comply with the GIGW and to take necessary action to make all websites under ministry/department compliant with the above guidelines and to also send the current status of all websites under their purview in the enclosed proforma. 

The website contains recommended guidelines for development and management of Government Websites and Portals in India. The guidelines address the entire lifecycle of a website, web portal/application right from its conceptualization to design, development, maintenance and management. The site also has a section that showcases the sites that have met with the mandatory requirements of the guidelines. The guidelines are accessible at http://web.guidelines.gov.in
