Kiphire: Farmers trained on diversified farming practices

Kiphire, October 17 (MExN): A training programme on ‘diversified farming practices for doubling farmers’ income’  under KKA-III was conducted at Sanphure village, Kiphire district on October 9 organised by KVK, Kiphire.

Temjenna Jamir, SMS (Agro meteorology), DAMU, KVK Kiphire spoke on crop diversification for better conditions on food security and how it helps  in doubling farmers’ income. She also spoke on how it acts as one of the main sources in rejuvenating the soil, provided that crops should be selected accordingly during the cropping season such as legumes followed by cereals and can even go for intercropping of cereals and legumes in one cropping season. This would help not only in maintaining soil fertility but also helps in reducing the risk of 100% crop loss i.e., if one crop fails one crop can be used for generating the income, a press release from the SMS informed.

During the training programme, seeds such as beans, carrot, radish, spinach and fenugreek were also distributed to the farmers.  The seeds distributed were sponsored from a joint initiative of ICAR-KVK and IFFCO. Resource person Thungjano Tsopoe, Agriculture Inspector, DAO Kiphire, highlighted about the package of practices of the distributed seeds and also its nutritional values. Importance and benefits of micro greens, crops suitable for micro greens and how to grow them were also apprised to the farmers. All together 50 farmers attended the training programme.
