Need for Old Age Home felt in Nagaland: Sazo

Parliamentary secretary for social welfare and women development, Chotisuh Sazo today stated that there is no doubt that the lives of aged people have been dramatically transformed from pitiable to admirable state. “I believe that what good work the Good Samaritans have started with endure and flourish,” Sazo said while addressing the 5th foundation day of the Kohima Old Age Home here today.

He said the need for Old Age Home has been felt and accordingly have been set up in many parts of the world since many years back. The need has been felt even in Nagaland. People have talked about the need to set up such homes even in Nagaland. However, the realization of such need has not been possible for many people. Sazo also asserted that the importance of establishing Old Age Home in Nagaland cannot be overstated. For many years the need of Old Age Homes among the Nagas has been debated on many well-meaning people because of the close-knit society that Nagaland have. Many people who argues against the need of having one says that it would be unnecessary because respective families can take care of their aged members. However, the need to have in one and the merit in having one has been established through this home that the Good Samaritans have been set up. 

He said that the Old Age Home has made many people aware that the elderly folks of our society have been given the privileged to live the last days of their lives in grace with dignity. “I am aware that the aged folks who reside with you are treated with great care and kindness by the founders and the staff alike,” he said adding the way they have been tended to with true concern cannot fail to move the hearts of many who have been indifferent or setting up of Old Age Home in Naga society. Sazo also hailed the effort of the Good Samaritans for the professional approach, apart from love and care, which they care for these aged people. Referring to a presence of medical professionals in Old Age Home to take care of the inmates, he said “ This is of utmost necessity because they are in the stage of life when their health conditions have become fragile and in need of constant care.” 

Sazo also released the magazine of the Old Age Home. Earlier, Neithonuo T. Liegise, managing director Kohima Old Age Home highlighted the activities of the Home. Kohima Old Age Home, located at India Gandhi Stadium road, opposite fishery directorate, was established in 2005. The objective of the Home is to create pleasant and secure environment for the residents, to provide quality health care for their physical, psychological emotional and spiritual needs, to ensure proper nutrition and health care, to protect senior citizens rights, to organize recreational programmes and activities and to conduct free medical camp for senior citizens in collaboration with specialized doctors and recognized hospitals both private and government, to organize spiritual programme and activities of their spiritual growth, to organize keep fit activities and exhibitions/cultural programme, to involve and participate by the senior citizens, to train and impart the caregivers with skills and knowledge to give quality care to senior citizens, to reach out to the needy and underprivileged senior citizens to get more information about their issues and to help on their problems, to give family counseling on elderly being abused and to create good relationship, etc.
