WC NNPGs condemns killing of former ZB (AMN) President

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 24 (MExN): The Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) Working Committee today condemned the abduction and killing of former Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) President, Athuan Abonmai on September 22.

“The fact that the presence of Manipur Chief Minister and hundreds of security forces in the vicinity failed to prevent a broad daylight abduction and subsequent murder, shows how outspoken community leaders are becoming easy prey to criminal organizations,” said a press release from the Working Group Convener, N Kitovi Zhimomi and the Co-Conveners.

It meanwhile questioned “was Manipur state forces hand in glove armed organisations?” It stated that “groups and organisations committing terrorist acts to stifle rights of individuals and communities must be challenged effectively and collectively.”

The WC, NNPGs said that Abonmei “spoke his mind freely without fear or favour in the face of dire threats, even as his peers crumbled and knelt before gun and money power. He stood firm against elements keeping the interest of Zealiangrong and Naga people above all else, fully aware of the absolute political and economic bondage of his land and people.”

It referred to Abonmei as ruthless critic against those “who are bent on keeping communities under tight leash with threats, false narrative and impractical nationalism,” and said that “the Zeliangrong people shall master in their own land.” “Zealiangrongs in particular and Nagas in general needed a fierce unrestrained mind like his,” it added. The WC stated that it had “positive interactions with Abonmai in the past,” adding that “the heartwarming mutual respect is deeply cherished.”

It further stated that “Nagas, Meiteis, Kukis and other communities must learn to co-exist and progress as equal partners in the neighbourhood. We have lived together for centuries and will continue to do so. Mutual respect and recognition for each other’s history is important.”  The WC, NNPGs meanwhile conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
