After working in a national oil exploration company for precisely a decade, Blecy Tep decided to venture into “Five Ferns” (https://www.fiveferns.in/) –something she has been musing over for several years.

She was working as a Geoscientist at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Dehradun but decided to quit her well-paid job in 2020 to follow her passion.

Two years after she joined public sector undertakings in 2010, she says, “I was finding ways for my next future. Though my job was really good in terms of salary and facilities, life is not just about having a nice couch, nice living room, and all those luxury. I can’t just do something for the sake of money.”

Coming across as someone who gives her 100% in whatever she does, she didn’t quite see ‘result’ in her previous job. “There were days I worked till 7:00-8:00 pm. One time, I started New Year with work, but where is the result of it? I can’t just be wasting my time. Five years down the line, I didn’t see my future there,” she relates to The Morung Express.

In a way, she also confesses that “I wanted to be my own boss,” which, she adds, “is liberating but also very challenging.”

“I think the main inspiration to do this (Five Ferns) was the work ethics, to really work in a good way”, she says while recalling how working in the office tends to be more of ‘quantity’ than ‘quality’.

That’s why, she explains, “I decided I can’t go on like this. I am leaving my job to be my own boss, create work ethics, focusing on quality work and create a company that makes a difference.” That was when “Five Ferns” came into being and was formally launched on December 16, 2021.

The groundwork however started long before she quit her job. “I did a lot of research and one area I could see my potential was to have customization. All the products at Five Ferns are very personal to me- the designing of it, the thinking of it, if anyone goes through the products, it will reflect my character,” she puts across.

Five Ferns signifies five different branches of her company including Home & Living Products, Kids Products, DIY Supplies, Hair Accessories, and the fifth, she expresses desire to venture into food.

“I am very interested in taking our Naga food to the world market. Our Naga food has so much potential, even our raw products, but only if we do it in the right, standard way,” she articulates.

Barely a week since it was launched, Five Ferns has also generated interest from customers living in the UK, Canada, US, and UAE.

Mindful that not everybody can afford to quit their jobs just to follow their passion, Blecy is grateful for the opportunity to start anew with something she is passionate about and further expresses, “I am really thankful to God from the bottom of my heart that we got the opportunity.”

“When I say about my work ethics and quality of life, I can’t miss out all those values about being a Christian, that quality of life that I have in me and what I want to do, all the work ethics, it all comes down to me being a Christian,” she affirms. “The core foundation is me being a Christian…to be able to provide the best, maybe not the best in the world but the best we can,” she puts across.
