TB Default Rate less by 3%

Dimapur, July 18 (MExN): The 2nd Quarterly Review Meeting 2009 of the Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) was held on July 16, 2009 at the Red Cross Conference Hall, Kohima. 

During the Quarter, Nagaland has performed exceptionally well. The Case Detection Rate reached an all time high of 93% (National target 70%) while the Cure Rate remained at 90 %( National Target 80 %) Out of the 3291 TB suspects examined during the last three months, 952 patients have been registered for DOTS treatment. Default Rate, which has always been a cause of concern for the programme was considerably less with only 3% this time. Retreatment case was also kept low at 4% only. Kohima, Dimapur,Wokha, Tuensang,Mon and Mokokchung were among the best performing Districts.

Dr. Palash Talukdar, the recently appointed RNTCP North East Consultant sensitized the Districts TB Officers who were present in the Meeting on External Quality Assurance (EQA). It maybe mentioned here that RNTCP places high importance on EQA, which is a process to ensure good quality sputum Microscopy. He also stressed on the importance of TB/HIV cross referral activities which needs to be strengthened. While the Programme was chaired by Dr. John Sweyievisa, Joint Director ,DHFW, Dr. K T Lotha, the State TB Officer gave a brief presentation on the 2nd Quarter State Performance. The Meeting was attended by all the Officers and Staff of State TB Cell and the District TB Centres. It is also anticipated that with this Quarter’s performance, Nagaland will be placed among the best performing state at the national level.
