Nagaland Board HSLC and HSSLC 2024 results: Gender gap narrows

KOHIMA, APRIL 26 (MExN): The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) announced the results for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations 2024 on Friday. 

Giving an overview of the results, NBSE Chairperson Asano Sekhose informed that in HSLC, out of 22136 candidates, a total of 15588 candidates qualified the examination with a qualified percentage of 71.87%. In 2023, the overall pass percentage was 70.32%. 

Girls fared better with 8455 (51.92%) qualifying and 7133 (49.79%) boys qualifying the examination. In the Top 20 list, there are 77 candidates out of which 23 are boys and the rest 54 are girls.

The pass percentage for government schools this year stands at 48.55% while for private schools, the pass percentage is 86.77%. In 2023, pass percentage for government schools was 49.13% and 91.15% for private schools. 

In terms of district wise performance for government schools, Kohima district topped the table with a percentage of 67% followed by Tseminyu and Phek districts at 61% and 60%. Shamator district is at the bottom with 3%.

In private schools, Tseminyu district is at the top with a percentage of 93% followed by Kohima and Mokokchung at 90%.

22 candidates under the category of Children with Special Needs appeared the examination with various concessions like extra time, exemption of examination fees, scribe, use of laptop, etc. 12 of them qualified the examination.

In HSSLC, the overall pass percentage in Arts stream is 83.16%, Commerce stream is 87.67% and Science stream is 80.88%. In 2023, the overall pass percentage for Arts, Science and Commerce streams stood at 82.62%, 86.79% and 85.83% respectively.  

An analysis of the exam results has revealed a narrowing of the gender gap in academic performance across various streams, a DIPR report revealed. 

In the Arts stream, 77.59% of male students passed the exam from government schools, while the pass percentile for female students stood at 82.98%. The gap was even smaller in private schools, where 84.20% of male students and 90.25% of female students cleared the exams.

Commerce stream showed a more balanced performance, with 91.67% of male students and 91.11% of female students passing from government schools. In private schools, the pass percentile was 88.68% for male students and 90.35% for female students.

Science stream, also witnessed a significant reduction in the gender disparity. While 60.90% of male students passed from government schools, the figure for female students was 77.42%. In private schools, 81.81% of male students and 86.02% of female students cleared the exams.

The trend was also observed in the HSLC exams, where the pass percentile for male students in government schools was 46.07%, while for female students it stood at 50.35%. In private schools, the gap was more pronounced, with 84.33% of male students and 89.02% of female students passing the exams, the DIPR report stated.


3 toppers in HSSLC from Govt schools 

It is heartening to mention that there are 3 toppers from Government Higher Secondary Schools in the merit list at the HSSLC Examination 2024 in Arts stream. They are from Mayangnokcha GHSS, Mokokchung; Chümoukedima GHSS and Bautüng GHSS, Longleng in Rank 5(a), Rank 5(c) and Rank 8 respectively.

In Children with Special Needs (CWSN) category, 14 candidates applied for exemptions and appeared the examination. Out of 14 candidates, 10 of them passed, 4 in 1st Division and 6 in 2nd Division.


Compartmental Examination & Improvement of Performance

Meanwhile, the NBSE has informed that the eligibility criteria for the HSLC and HSSLC 2024 Compartmental Examination and Improvement of Performance have been raised from 3(three) to 4(four) subjects in the greater interests of the students. As such, candidates failing in 4(four) or less subjects are eligible to apply and sit for the HSLC and HSSLC Compartmental Examination, the Board informed. 

Both the HSLC and HSSLC Compartmental Examination and Improvement Examination shall be conducted in June 2024. Candidates desirous of appearing these two examinations must apply online through the NBSE portal from May 10-18, 2024.


Improvement examination 

Provision for candidates who qualified at the HSLC Examination but secured Needs Improvement in one subject will be given the opportunity to reappear in the Needs Improvement subject at the immediate examination can apply for courses, fulfill certain recruitment criteria and employment where they need to pass in all the subject they have opted.


Issue of migration certificate 

Provision to download Migration Certificate will be made available at the NBSE portal www.nbsenl.edu.in. The Migration Certificate will be digitally signed. 

However, those candidates who desire to avail the hard copy of the Migration Certificate can come to the Board’s office during office hours once they receive their original mark sheets, the Board informed.
