The Morung Express Suggestion Platform

Dear Readers, in the backdrop of the recently concluded North East Games 2024, these are some practical suggestions on steps the Nagaland government need to take in developing sports in Nagaland

•    High time for the Nagaland government to make a standard indoor basketball court as there is no public courts in Nagaland. Basketball Courts usually belongs to schools or colleges.

•    To develop sports in Nagaland, you cannot have sports under the youth and resource department, you need a full-fledged sports department. In this way, the department can focus on both infrastructure and development of sports at the grassroots level.

•    The Nagaland team would have secured more medals in the NE Olympics if the players have better coaches. This was obvious in some of the games. We need better coaches.

•    The Nagaland government must take steps to ensure that there is no nepotism, tribalism or corruption in the arena of sports. This is the most important step. We continue to see how coaches decide the composition of the team. If the coach belongs to tribe A, there is a tendency to see that most of the players are also from tribe A. We see this at the village level where clan politics is involved, we see this in the district level where village favouritism is there and we see this at the state level where tribalism is thriving. This is detrimental to sports in Nagaland. Such clanisn, tribalism and favouritism should not exist in sports. To prevent such malpractices at the state level, the government should have check and balance mechanism and do its best to have coaches with absolute integrity.
•    When we talk about sports it is not just about raw talent and grooming them to become professional players. We Nagas are very emotional people and lack objectivity. We have also become very indiscipline. This is where the sports management and coaches become necessary. Our Naga sportspersons need to have discipline and focus. We need consistency.

•    Poor infrastructure, less audience, No live-update in TV or any media

•    Need to reach to grassroots levels and open sports to the general public with well advertising so that all can have a chance to join in. Instead of the rich few who control the sports.

•    NE Games was indeed an intriguing encounter to the Nagas. We have witness that we can perform high level like State of Manipur. The younger gen has seen a ray of hope in sports and that we must keep the aspirations alive equally. Having said that, we are in dire need of Academy which we have only few atm. Infrastructure and complete the impending projects. Work on coordination, technicians, experts, coaches, good experience & exposure, engagement with every districts associations and support for the govt. Bravo to Nagaland team for superb results.

•    Nagaland has done enough. Kudos.

•    Selecting talented players from all corners of the state.

•    My prayer is don't ever make like Dimapur Stadium.

•    Build more sports infrastructure and organise more and bigger events.

•    Chup chap stadium complete kuri

•    Basketball rims should be welded with the hardest of the metal on earth.

•    Organise yearlong sports tournament/events. Academy's is a necessity in this stage.

•    Complete the state stadium in Dimapur

•    Most importantly stop misusing the funds allocated.

•    Built stadiums and proper training centers in other districts too... not only Kohima

•    Nagaland need early age regular & proper sports academy.

•    Build a world class multiple sports complex

•    Nurturing and mentoring the young talents by real professionals (Can be hired if need be) in multidisciplinary fields of games n sports with the requisite infrastructure. We must have a decadal plan & vision. Everything is about meticulous planning and training. Only then we can compete at the national and global level.

•    Giving privileges to all the nook and corner of Nagaland irrespective of tribes and regions. Platforms are meant to be shared not just same faces performing all over.

•    Not a direct answer for the question being asked, however in my opinion, schools, just like other mandatory school subjects, should offer some extra skill based courses in their brochure etc… It can be a combination of music (let's say piano, drums), web design, cooking and sports (Basketball, football). Similarly, they should recruit subject matters professional mentors for such courses. Also the integration of such skill based subjects in their routine should be on an everyday basis and not weekly. Something like the last 1 hour in their everyday school routine. It's a little unrealistic or may take time to put such standards in already running normal traditional schools, however, there are few newly established schools that are trying to implement such routines as well as its infrastructure and recruitment of professional mentors and yes the raise in admission and money school fees as well. Likewise, hand in hand along with other mandatory school subjects, those extra courses over time will also be considered as a norm in the future and so the output from Nagaland in whatever the fields...from those young minds in the coming future. And yes! particularly in case of sports, students really have this dilemma whether to continue with college or leave education after 12 for pursuing football let's say…because the future for them is uncertain as there is no push in sports sector in our state itself and if plan don’t go as planned, as they just studied till 12th, they aren't eligible for government exams etc… so yeah…if such courses are a part of their college programme... something in sync with NEP 2020? (not clear though) as they focus on holistic development. Similarly, I believe it will also break the sole dependence on government jobs trend as they will always have a backup plan.....in this way I believe we can stop this whole domino effect thing… seems like I took the question too seriously.

•    Improve the infrastructure.

•    Instead of misusing the funds the govt of the day should honestly build up the sports infrastructures for the youths. The present infrastructures of Nagaland are shameful…. Compared to Diphu also, a far flung district of Assam

•    They have done exceptionally this edition, I would suggest specifically for Football. I think they should build up from grassroots level by organising u-14, u-19,u-21 tournaments in an interval time. Otherwise it will be hard to compete with the rest of the state and has no scope. Infrastructure is a must.

•    NL Government to tie up with every educational institutions and give grants-in-aid every financial year to build us sports infrastructure developments in our state

•    North East Olympic games khotam, no follow up for the sports persons, see them next year if possible

•    Same sports infrastructure in all the district headquarters...and also wants to know statistics of participants from all the district.

•    Integrate sports deeply into school and college education,. Academics and sports can go hand in hand. It's really not about a onetime sports week in a year but a structured system to give a fair chance to the best

•    Who is the sports minister of Nagaland

•    Nagaland has plenty of sporting talents in Nagaland but no infrastructure to mould them and lack of tournament to tap talents and also create opportunities for sportsperson to showcase their talents. To improve sports, the same requisite is needed in every state including Nagaland. 1. Build and upgrade sports facilities such as stadiums, training centers, and sports complexes to international standards. Atleast completing the incomplete stadiums would be beneficial; 2. Provide specialized coaching and training programs for athletes in various sports to enhance their skills and competitiveness; 3. Focus on developing sports at the grassroots level by promoting sports in schools and communities to identify and nurture young talent; 4. Provide financial support, scholarships, and other incentives to athletes to help them pursue sports as a career. Manipur got all their infrastructure in all sports discipline after they hosted the National Games some years back. They improved by leaps and bounds and became a sports powerhouse in India. Nagaland govt. should bid and host the National Games so that the Centre will establish all the state of D'art sporting infrastructure and thus help in the overall development and improvement of sports in Nagaland, benefiting both athletes and the community. Hope the concluded North Games has been an eye opener to the concerned authority, it has also shown that have plenty of talents in sports if given the chance. Congrats to team Nagaland!
•    Expectation and reality was different....not satisfied.

•    First make the guy who threw water at the Assamese player during the 3rd quarter to apologise for his manner less act. Acting tough in front of his girl just because the player shoved her by mistake while playing the game after his layup attempt in the basket. Sala chapri showing dada giri here and wonder why we get bullied outside. But the sad thing was nobody confronted or said anything to this guy.

•    Identity the person who threw coffee at the Assam basketball player and have him make an apology video. Such a shameful thing!
