Governor of Nagaland Kumar today said intensive research has to be done for the horrifying damage on nature and work with protecting the environment. “Everyone in Nagaland or India or anywhere has to realize that we owe this country in the task of protecting the climate”, said Governor Nikhil.

In commemoration of its Silver Jubilee year (1985-2010), St Joseph College of Jakhama organized a two seminar themed ‘Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities: Responses to Climate Change.’ Governor Nikhil Kumar was the chief guest. “If we have to protect earth or environment, we need to think out of the box, we need to take timely actions, by all nations”, he said. Advocating the use of non-fossil fuels, and the use of renewable energy such as solar and wind energy, the governor affirmed that the people need to ‘combine and reconcile progress and environment change.’

He said that ‘those responsible for emission of harmful gases’ into the atmosphere affecting the climate need to be ‘ruthlessly challenged’ and advise them to use non-polluting fuels and energies in their factories.

Appealing to the students to be attentive and learn the ‘words of wisdom’ from the resource persons, the governor urged them to exhibit the desire to check climate change not only ‘within oneself’ but also for the entire country since it is the need of the hour.

The Vice Principal St Joseph College, Jakhama Father Abraham Lotha said that the college organized the seminar and invited renowned climate and environmental activists to create awareness among the students and also to make a concrete response to climate change which has become a global issue today.

The keynote speaker was Probir Bose of Grameen Development Services, Nalanda- Resource Centre for Educational Innovation. Bose said Climate Change requires global efforts. People should be aware of the consequences of the impact; nobody can expect from anyone even from the government for a solution as it is an effort needing everyone’s participation, he said.

Bose also said people should be eco-friendly by preserving forest and should seek alternatives to fossil fuels. The destruction of forests is also a contributing factor to Climate Change. The second day of the seminar will begin at 9.30 am under the theme “Deforestation, Climate Change and Food Security”. Keynote Speaker, Rakesh Kalshian will speak on the topic “Critique of the Science of Climate Change”.
