10,000 saplings planted to stabilize landslide

Dimapur, April 23 (MExN): As part of landslide stabilization activity and also as part of the Earth Day celebrations, the Forest Department and the Border Roads Organisation undertook joint plantation in the old KMC dumping site along the National Highway- 39 on the Thursday last.
DFO, Kohima Division Temjen informed in a press release that altogether around 50 participants from the two different organizations took part in the plantation. The BRO was led by Col. Maladi, Commander, 15-BRTF, Shailender Kumar, OC BRTF and Hukam Singh, OIC NH 39 BRTF. The team from the Forest Department was led by Temjen, Divisional Forest Officer, Kohima and Velatso, ACF.
Altogether around 10,000 saplings of Alder, Macaranga and Broom grass were planted during the plantation programme. The saplings for the plantation were provided by the office of the DFO, Kohima Division of the Forests Department. It may be recalled that the area had witnessed a major landslide last year leading to the closure of the National highway for months together. It is hoped that such interventions, both biological as well as mechanical will stabilise the landslide area.
