105-year-old Havildar (retd) Mering Ao honoured on Independence Day

SUNGRATSU, AUGUST 15 (MExN): Dr M Chuba Ao, National Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chairman of MARCOFED, on Friday visited the residence of Havilder (retd) Mering Ao, a 105-year-old veteran of the 3rd Assam Rifles, in Sungratsu village of Mokokchung district, and honoured him on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day.

Mering Ao, a recipient of the Shaurya Chakra in 1960, was felicitated along with his 100-year-old wife, Sentiyangla Ao. Dr Chuba Ao presented the National Flag to the centenarian as a tribute to his service to the nation.

“It is a great pleasure to meet such an extraordinary individual who has lived over a century and served the country with unparalleled courage,” Dr Chuba Ao said.

The veteran was awarded the Shaurya Chakra on April 27, 1960, by then President Dr Rajendra Prasad for acts of gallantry. He retired from service in November 1960 after a distinguished career in the armed forces.

Dr Chuba Ao described the veteran as a “living testament” to India’s legacy of bravery and patriotism whose life continues to inspire the people of Nagaland and the nation.
