Altogether 130 schools in Dimapur have been declared Tobacco Free Zone so far in addition to three villages having the same status in the district.
This was informed by Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, Kevekha Kevin Zehol during the World No Tobacco Day observation programme at Delhi Public School, Darogapathar on Friday.
Quoting various sources, the DC pointed out that Nagaland ranked second in consumption/usage of ganja, heroine and sedatives and inhalants. He also said 1.7% of the Naga populace were alcoholic and there were 34888 injecting drug users. Noting such a scenario, he appealed the people not to consume tobacco and indulge in abusive substances.
Guest of honour, Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi, Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur also appealed the students and youngsters to desist from consumption of tobacco and its related products.
Special guest, Chuba Jamir who himself is an oral cancer survivor urged the young people not to abuse substance since they know it well that it was detrimental to their health.
Dr. Michael Tetseo, an alumnus of DPS Darogapathar delivered the keynote address. During the programme, Tenyiphe village was awarded a certificate for declaring its village Tobacco Free. Certificates were also awarded to 11 students of Mass Communication and Journalism, Patkai Christian College for making a video on anti-tobacco.
Observing the day, around 20 schools in Dimapur took out processions in different parts of the city.
