1st Nagaland Open Women Football League begins in Kohima

Win for KIC Kohima, Peren Women FC on day-one

Kohima | June 26

The 1st Nagaland Open Women Football League cum Knock-out tournament under the aegis of Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland, commenced today at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima.

Khelo India Centre (KIC) Kohima defeated Football Association Phek District (FAPD) 5-0 in the inaugural match. Mhasekhonuo opened the account for KIC in the 10th minute. Chimmushe increased the score tally of the team in the 34th minute. Neke Konyak fetched the first hat-trick of the tournament, for the KIC, in the 55th, 61st, and 66th minute.

Peren District Women FC downed Northern Angami Youth & Sports Association- C (NAYSA-C) 5- 2 in the second match. Ruth inked the first goal for Peren District Women FC in the 3rd minute. Krungi contributed two goals while Shangki and Ahoy netted a goal each for the team. Vizotunuo netted both the goals for NAYSA-C in the 41st and 45th minute.

The tournament will continue till July 1.
 
‘Put Nagaland in the sports map of the world’
Earlier, gracing the inaugural function as the special guest, Nagaland’s Industries & Commerce, Advisor Hekani Jakhalu Kense maintained that sport has become a billion dollar industry.

In Nagaland, she said, the state government is working hard to create a healthy and fine environment for the young people through sports. She hoped that with the support of the Chief Minister and advisor for YRS, more would be done to promote sports in the state.  

She encouraged the young players to take sports as a profession and make it a career to earn livelihood and also bring laurels to themselves and also to put Nagaland in the sports map of the world.

She also said that sport teaches many things, including leadership qualities and team work and perseverance. In this, she asked the young sportspersons not to give up as life is not a bed of roses but to remain focused without being distracted to achieve their goal in life and be a successful person in the future.  
 
Women inter-district football C’ship by Oct in Kohima
Delivering a short speech, Nagaland Football Association (NFA) President, K Neibou Sekhose informed that the 1st edition of the Women Inter-District Football Championship will be held in the month of October at Kohima. He appreciated the youth resources and sports department for taking initiative to promote football especially for women in the state.

Today, Nagaland may not have world standard ground, but there are a good number of grounds for practice and tournament, latest football kits and good number of football coaches. In this, he said it is up to the players to have a strong determination to excel in their given talent.

To be the best or on the top, you need to walk an extra mile without depending on clubs, associations or even the government, he said. Have courage, work hard with commitment to achieve your goal, he said.

Earlier, Youth Resources & Sports Director, Kethosituo Sekhose chaired the inaugural function programme. Vikhoto Zao, Associate Pastor PCRC Kohima invoked God’s blessing. Seyiekhonuo Yhome presented a special number. Tournament Secretary, Kevileibei Paphino administered oath to the participating teams.
