Peren, January 9 (MExN): The 28th Liangmai Sports Meet of the Liangmai Sports Association (LSA), Assam, Manipur and Nagaland, commenced on January 8 with an opening ceremony at Samziuram village in Peren district under the theme, “Strive to Transcend.”
Altogether, 47 contingents from villages across Assam, Nagaland and Manipur are participating in the event, which will feature competitions in football, volleyball, athletics, badminton, marathon and other disciplines.
The opening ceremony was graced by Namri Nchang, MLA of 6 Tening A/C, as the Special Guest. Indian international footballer Seiminlen Doungel made a special appearance, while Deputy Commissioner, Peren, Hiazu Meru, and President of Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland, Wingam Nring, attended as special invitees.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Nchang encouraged players to embrace discipline and sportsmanship and urged participants to promote peace and unity among the Zeliangrong people. He unfurled the ceremonial flag and declared the meet open.
Sharing his journey, Doungel expressed joy at being part of the event, recalling his humble beginnings playing football with improvised equipment.
He listed keeping God first, developing a strong mindset and working hard as three guiding principles and keys to success.
In his presidential address, LSA President Kadilinbo SP highlighted the achievements of Liangmai athletes at state and national levels, noting that five players had secured government jobs through the sports quota.
Following the inaugural programme, an exhibition football match between the Peren District Football Association (PDFA) XI and Liangmai Sports Association (LSA) XI ended in a 0–0 draw. In the second exhibition match, PDFA officials defeated LSA officials 3–0.
Samziuram Village Council Chairman Nlumlu Nkie welcomed the gathering, while Paramrisi and Ningtingbo lit the event torch.
The inaugural programme also included an opening spotlight by KJMS Samziuram, special music by Peren District Voice Impact 4.0 winner Kewizengdauliu, an acknowledgement by organising committee co-convenor Amonbo, and a divine blessing by Rev Joshua Zeliang of COGOP-India.
Meanwhile, football competitions began on January 9, with a total of 16 matches scheduled.
