Dimapur | October 2

The Dimapur Police have arrested at least three persons in connection to the cold-blooded murder of a truck driver in Dimapur. The arrests were made by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the case, as tweeted by the Dimapur police on October 2 evening.

When contacted for more details, the Dimapur Police said that the three individuals were arrested in an operation conducted in Dimapur by the SIT on the night of October 1.

Their identities were not disclosed with the police only stating they were remanded to 5 days police remand. Out of the three, one was said to be a member of a Naga Political Group.

The deceased victim— Jiten Gogoi, was found shot dead outside a warehouse on the morning of September 22.  The police have not revealed much but it is suspected to be related to illegal tax demand.

An exasperated business community in Dimapur, bogged down by years of unabated illegal taxation, reacted with calls for prompt action on the part of the State Government to arrest the people involved.

Transport unions in Dimapur and neighbouring Karbi Anglong district of Assam jointly issued an ultimatum to the Nagaland State Government, in protest, while warning of indefinite ‘chakka jam’ against Dimapur if action was not taken within 3 days. They also demanded the government to compensate the bereaved family.

The unions— Dimapur District Truck Owners Association (DDTOA), Dimapur Truck Drivers’ Union (DTDU), Dimapur District Truck Driver Welfare Trade Union (DDTDWTU), Lahorijan and Khatkhati Truckers Welfare Society and Bokajan Truck Owners Association, issued the ultimatum through a press release on September 24.

They also demanded the government to end the on-off practice of leasing out toll collection to third parties by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), alleging the “lease system is the root cause of the entire problem.”

The three-day ultimatum expired on September 27 without any statement in response from the government. The ‘chakka jam’ began at 7:00 am on September 29 and continues to remain in effect.
