MON, AUGUST 8 (MExN): In a major boost to wildlife conservation as well as rising awareness among the community on the importance of wildlife in the state, three jackals, including one male and two females, were rescued from Chen area and handed over to Mon Forest Department by Panglem Bohlim, a citizen of Chenwetnyu village.

In order to ensure their survival, the rescued jackals were kept in observation at Mon town and later released in Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS) by staffs of this sanctuary on August 7, a press release issued by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Mon Forest Division, Rajesh Kumar informed.

This is the only wildlife sanctuary of Mon district created for wildlife conservation, recently also declared as a reserve forest for Elephants. This kind of development offers a new ray of hope for forest department involving communities towards wildlife conservation in state, the DFO informed.

The Mon Forest Division and Singphan WLS conveyed their appreciation to the citizen of Chenwetnyu village for rescuing the wildlife and donating them to the department.

Highlighting that certain wild animals have been given legal protection under Wildlife Protection Act 1972, which was also extended to Nagaland through a resolution passed in 1981 by state government, the DFO said the involvement of community becomes very important in implementing this act due to unique kind of land ownership in the state.

He also noted that all the churches in the State held a special prayer on the first Sunday of October 2023 for spreading awareness of wildlife conservation  coinciding with the Wildlife Week (2-8th October) celebrated across India.

The churches of Mon district also joined with other district by holding special prayer on that day. This was very well received in all the section of media within and across the states of India, the DFO said.
