33% quota: Women ‘abuse’ AG

DIMAPUR, JUNE 18 (MExN): Hearing on the 33% quota for women in municipalities and town councils scheduled for Tuesday at the Principal Seat of Gauhati High Court, Guwahati has been deferred to June 27. The matter was listed for admission in the court for Tuesday but was postponed by the court for its own convenience.

However, after the matter got over, an ugly episode took place when Naga women representatives “abused and misbehaved” with the learned Advocate General (AG) Nagaland, C. Balgopal inside the court premises. When Balgopal came out of the court room, women representatives reportedly used invectives on him such as “Don’t you have mother, sister?”, “We have come here incurring so much of expenses” etc in the presence of advocate community.

Learning about the incident, the counsel representing the women, C. Gonzales immediately apologised to the AG Nagaland. The matter was, however, brought to the notice of the honourable Judges before whom the counsel representing the women sought apology and gave an undertaking that such misconduct shall not be repeated in the future.

This report has been sourced from AG establishment Nagaland at Guwahati.

Meanwhile the High Court Bar Association, Kohima in an emergency meeting held on 19.06.2012 strongly condemned what it termed was the misbehaviour and unbecoming conduct towards the Advocate General Nagaland at the Gauhati High Court on 19.06.2012 by some of the members of the women organisations in support of 33% women reservation in the Municipal /Town Council elections.

The Bar, while appreciating their Counsel Shri C.Gonsalves for tendering apology to the Honourable High Court and the Advocate General Nagaland, has however decided that it will not tolerate such misbehavior in future and will resort to its own course of action for taking necessary steps upon litigants who resort to such unethical behaviour.  This was stated in a press note issued by T. Koza, President and A. Zhimomi, General Secretary of the High Court Bar Association.
