The 4th Mokokchung Town Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament 2025, organised by the Kumlong Sporting Association under the aegis of the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA), kicked off today at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, Mokokchung, under the theme “Forging Champions.”
The inaugural programme was graced by Imkongchuba, Chairman of the Mokokchung Municipal Council, as the Guest of Honour.
In his address, Imkongchuba lauded the Kumlong Sporting Association for its initiative in sustaining the inter-ward volleyball tournament into its fourth edition. He described sports as more than just a game—“a teacher, a mirror, and a path,” emphasizing that true sportsmanship is reflected in one’s discipline, consistency, humility, and respect both on and off the court.
“Winning or losing is part of every sport, but the character you display in both moments defines you more than the scoreboard,” he said. “The greatest victory you can claim is not the trophy, but the person you become in the process.”
This year’s edition features participation from five wards—Kichutip, Penli, Mongsenbai, Kumlong, and Artang—a decline from previous years. Notably, defending champions Sungkumen Ward, who also won the inaugural edition in 2022, are not participating this year.
Speaking to The Morung Express, organisers shared that the reduced participation was mainly due to players’ involvement in other sporting events across the state and scheduling conflicts.
The two-day tournament opens with round-robin matches on Day 1, followed by knockouts on Day 2 to decide the finalists and crown the new champion.
In the opening match, Kichutip Ward outclassed Penli Ward, winning convincingly in straight sets 25–10, 25–17. The competition will continue tomorrow with qualifying rounds and the final match to crown the 2025 inter-ward volleyball champions.
