Jotsoma | March 22 : The State Bank of India (SBI) today opened its 51st branch in Nagaland at Science College Jotsoma. The bank will be classified under rural centre. Out of 51st SBI branch spread over 11 district in the state, 12 branches are under rural centre and the rest fall under-semi urban Centre.
Parliamentary secretary for youth resources & sports Naiba Konyak inaugurated the branch as the chief guest here, this morning. Speaking on the occasion, the parliamentary secretary lauded the SBI that actively involved since 1973 in non profit activity called community services banking. Appreciating the banks of India where non bankrupt has arises till date whereas USA, Europe faced the problem, he said “I salute the banks of India and wish the very best of endeavor.”
Stating that SBI has a large number of welfare activities, social causes and commitment to nation building, he said the bank was forging ahead with cutting edge technology and innovative new banking models to expand its rural base. Looking at the vast untapped potential in the hinterland and proposed to cover 1 lakh villages in the next two years, Naiba said “This village Jotsoma is one of the fortunate among the online of the banking system in the country.” He called upon the villagers to inculcate the habit of depositing money in the bank.
Naiba also stated that under the leadership of Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland, several programmes and scheme have been initiated for the brighter future of Nagas particularly in the financial aspects and called upon the people of the state to be with the government policies for effective implementation of communitization. “How good is Government of Nagaland for empowerment of power to the villages for developing the state and community,” he said.
Gracing the function as the guest of honour, Dr. T. Lhouvi Nakhro, principal director, health & family welfare (Retd) said the opening of SBI branch at Jotsoma was a step forward for economy growth of the people of Jotsoma and called upon the people to take advantage of the same. He also urged the villagers to know how to access the bank services and at the same time appealed to the bank officials to enlighten the villagers regarding the various provision of the bank. Also, stating that it is the duty of the village to cooperate with bank to get the facility, he also requested the bank to give their best service to the people irrespective of status.

Sharma, GM, (NW-II) SBI Local Head Office, Guwahati said the SBI has been conducting financial literacy camp across the state and adding that the Bank will continue to carry such camps with renew vigour for the benefit of the people. He also told the people to be well aware of repayment capability before taking loan from bank. Speaking on behalf of Landlord-Nagi Clan, Nibu Nagi was appreciative of the SBI for opening the branch here. He also requested the bank to create awareness to the villagers on opening bank account and also the benefit aspect being offered by SBI.
The newly opened SBI branch will cater to all the banking needs of the villages under Sechu Block including institutions and establishment like science college, Sazolie College, Government High School, Govt Primary Schools, Private Schools, Hostels, Kohima Doordarshan, Govt. departments/ establishments within the vicinity of the centre, all business establishments and small scale industries, like stones crusher units, saw mills etc. Sechu block shall be wiped out from the list of unbanked block from now on consequent upon the opening of Science College (Jotsoma) branch, SBI official source said.
The main intension of opening a branch at a rural center like Jotsoma is to uplift the rural economy and also bring them under financial inclusion along with the rest of the country. The bank fervently requested the population of the area to make maximum use of banking facilities to treat the bank as their own institution in every sphere of operation. The public have also been requested to inculcate saving habits.
The bank should not be construed only in terms of loan giving entity rather it should be treated as the house for safe keeping of public money and to multiply their money legally through proper channel for various schemes of investments. More presence of bank branches in rural populated area may be treated as a healthy sign of economic development in the state. State bank has the best intention for the people of Nagaland and for rural economic upliftment, source said.
