KOHIMA, December 9 (MExN): Kohima Police apprehended a 71-year-old man in the PR Hill area on December 9 following reports of attempted extortion. The individual, identified as Mathungo Ovung, allegedly approached shopkeepers to demand money in the name of the NNC/FGN.
According to a press release from the Kohima police Public Relations Officer, information about the extortion bid was received a day earlier immediately after which a police team was dispatched. The suspect however evaded capture leaving the area by the time the police reached.
“Although the suspect had left the area before the team’s arrival, continuous follow-up measures were undertaken,” the release said, while stating that surveillance by plainclothes personnel was activated to identify and locate the suspect.
The suspect was eventually nabbed the next day by a joint team from the South Police Station and Anti-Extortion Team (South) near the near the Jack & Jill showroom.
The arrested individual was said to be a Deputy Kilonser in the NNC/FGN, and a resident of Lerie.
During the arrest, police seized Rs 4200 in cash, a mobile phone, and three demand slips purportedly issued by the FGN. Authorities also impounded a white Maruti Ritz (NL 07C 2974), along with the vehicle documents.
Police have registered a suo motu case at Kohima South Police Station under Section 302(2)(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) read with Section 7 of the Nagaland Security Regulation 1962.
“Further investigation is underway to determine and identify any additional links or activities associated with the case,” the release said, while urging prompt reporting of any extortion-related incidents or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or the police helpline by the citizens, including businesses.
