A lesson in punctuality for Naga students

For the attendees of the 45th fresher’s meet of the Naga Students’ Union Guwahati (NSUG), it turned out to be a lesson in “punctuality.” The programme held at Shipgram, near Kalashetra, on Saturday last, commenced more than an hour behind schedule, leaving Nagaland minister for Health & Family Welfare, Azo Nienu, and others invitees wondering on the time management of Naga students.

A visibly exasperated Azo who had to rush back to Dimapur the same day to attend another programme at Zion Hospital on Sunday, chose to be “frank” in his opinion about what he described the “casual approach” of the students. “NSUG is not a new union. Its 45 years old; a little older than me. Since you are a mature organization, you need to perform better, especially in punctuality,” the minister shot off the opening remarks of his address.

The minister said that punctuality is a great indicator of one’s commitment and sincerity to the work at hand and approach to life. “As morning shows the day, time is of the essence and you cannot deliver if you are not punctual. Punctuality is the key to making a vibrant society,” Azo said.

The minister said the current trend is that most Naga functions and programmes run behind schedule and instead of the audience and organizers waiting for the chief guest, the role is the reversed as it is usually the latter who reaches the venue first. The minister also made a passing reference to the 44th NSUG fresher’s social, which was reportedly held one and half hour behind schedule.

Lok Sabha MP, CM Chang, who was the chief guest in last year’s function, had also made known his displeasure over the inordinate delay. Before winding off his speech, Chang reportedly told the students that he would be able to partake lunch with them only “next year” as he had to hurry back home.

Advising the students not to fritter away their time, the minister said that whereas most Naga students consider college life as “a bed of roses,” other students take it as “a bed of thorns.” Azo also said“Put efforts for 3-4 years and enjoy the rest 40-50 years of your life, or enjoy the 3-4 years of college life and spend the rest of your life in misery. The choice is simple.”

DGM (AERO), Airport Authority of India, NER, M Zhimo who was the guest of honour, reminded the students never to forget the purpose for which they left their homes and come to Guwahati. Zhimo also said that the key to success lies in consistency, hard work and total focus.
