Addicts resort to scrap theft

DIMAPUR, NOV 24 (MExN): The locals of Thamnan and Bazaar colony caught three of the four persons involved in stealing a power tiller from a farm last week on Tuesday night at around 11 pm from Bazaar colony, Mon. The three persons were identified as Pangong, Pungchi and Omwang of block colony. Minphong Konyak, Press Assistant, Shansham Organization stated that the power tiller was found from a scrap dealer in Bazaar colony after making a search.The stolen item was sold to the dealer. The accused confessed to have stolen an aluminum ladder and six pieces of wooden planks a night before which was sold to another scrap dealer at Rs. 650, stated Minphong. The three culprits and Abdul, the scrap dealer were put behind bars while Tongpan was still absconding stated Minphong and added that the four culprits were confirmed to be drug addicts. 

Minphong stated that Scrap business has given a boost to petty thefts where theft was rare and considered as humiliating and unforgivable crime. “Actually, in its true sense, scrap business is a useful process but the situation in Mon tells another bewildering fact” stated Minphong and added that the ‘Drug-Scrap’ business has affected the community as a whole. Pointing out that scrap business was one of the greatest factors contributing to the rise of drug addicts and thefts in Mon, he stated that the origin of the problems and the contributing factors should be kept in mind along with the steps taken to fight drug and crimes.
