The book ‘Advent of Christianity in Nagaland,’ authored by Prof Dr Priyaranjan Trivedi and Prof Dr Zavise Rume, was released by MLA and Advisor for Law & Justice and Land Revenue, TN Mannen, on April 25 at International University, Chümoukedima.

Brought out by The World University Press, New Delhi, in collaboration with the university, the publication serves as the opening volume of a wide-ranging 21-part series that seeks to explore the influence of Christianity on Naga society across multiple dimensions, including culture, theology, music, architecture, and politics.

In his address as chief guest, Mannen reflected on the early arrival of Christianity in the Naga Hills, recalling the establishment of the first mission station by the American Baptist Missionary Union following the arrival of Rev Dr Edward Winter Clark at Molungkimong in 1872.

He noted that the book captures the wide-ranging changes that followed, such as the introduction of Roman script, expansion of education and healthcare, and the emergence of new skill systems that reshaped traditional life.

He further stated that the work offers a critical perspective on how early missionaries and colonial administrators often misread the structured socio-cultural and governance systems of the Nagas, describing them as “primitive” despite their organised community frameworks.

Mannen also highlighted the role of Christianity in advancing literacy, women’s empowerment, indigenous church leadership, and peace initiatives, while advocating a shift towards welfare-based missions and stronger inter-faith engagement.

Speaking on the occasion, Founder Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr Priyaranjan Trivedi, termed the release a significant personal and academic milestone. He said the book, co-authored with Professor Dr Zavise Rume, aims not only to document historical developments but also to provide a forward-looking perspective.

According to him, the advent of Christianity in Nagaland marked a broader socio-cultural shift that introduced modern education, printing practices, and global linkages.

He added that the work combines academic research with local insights and underscores the need to preserve historical foundations while embracing progress.

Brief remarks were also delivered by Chancellor Dr SN Pandey, Pro Chancellor Dr Utkarsh Sharma, Dr Father Panu Paul, and Father Siby John.
