Dimapur, July 15 (MExN): State Bank of India, Wokha Branch & District Administration jointly launched ‘Agriculture Finance Campaign for the Financial Year 2011-12’ in Wokha District from Seluku Village & Nungying Village on July 13.
This programme will cover other villages where Village Councils & Village Development Boards are already formed. The Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, Rovilatuo Mor, who is also the Chairman of the Village Development Board, officially launched the Campaign. Marking the occasion, 87 farmers from the two villages were given Kisan Credit Card loans by SBI, Wokha Branch amounting to rupees 15.80 lakhs. The cash & Bank Passbooks were handed over to the Beneficiaries by the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha.
Before the Program started, the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha and Branch Manager, SBI, Wokha Branch, toured Seluku Village and interacted with the villagers. The Meetings started in both villages with welcome speeches by Shri Tsatheo Kikon, Chairman, Seluku Village Council and Shri Elhio Yanthan, Chairman, Nungying Village Council respectively. They thanked the SBI, Wokha Branch for organizing such Program in their Villages, ‘which is first of its kind in Wokha district’ and for extending financial help to the farmers. The Chairmen of both villages assured full cooperation of the Village Authority to the Bank for timely repayment of the loan and copies of their Resolution to this effect were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha.
Speaking on the occasion, Rovilatuo Mor, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, appreciated the Branch Manager, SBI Wokha Branch and his team for their good works for the villagers by opening Savings Bank Accounts, Loan Documentation and disbursement of the loan in the village itself. He said that various schemes of the Bank are there from the beginning but he is doubtful whether such schemes have reached the actual target groups in the past. He thanked the present Branch Manager, Lanuteka Imchen and his staff for implementing such schemes in letter & spirit and assured full support to the Bank from the District Administration for the implementation & recovery of the loan as per the undertaking given by the Village Authority to the District Administration. He also advised the beneficiaries to utilize the loan amount judiciously, repay in time & take more loans from the Bank but at the same time warned them that in the event of default, he, as the Chairman of the Village Development Board, will recover the amount from the Village development Fund and directly remits the amount to the Bank. Deputy Commissioner also exhorted the Village Authority to keep the confidence of the Bank at any cost for the benefit of the farmers and advised the Beneficiaries not to put the Village Authority to shame. He also encouraged the farmers to shift from unproductive & traditional Jhum cultivation to more productive cash crops.
Lanuteka Imchen, Branch Manager, SBI Wokha Branch, in his speech, highlighted various Bank Schemes in Agriculture & Allied Sector. Agriculture, being the Priority Sector, Government of India is forcing the Bank to lend more to this sector for the economic growth of the Rural India. But due to lack of proper working mechanism between the Villages and the Bank, scattered villages and tough topography, especially in mountainous place like Nagaland, Bank Officials are finding difficult to reach out to the individual farmers in the village. He said that if Village Council & Village Development Board can come forward and assist the Bank in identifying the genuine farmers, recommend their names for various schemes and help in recovering the loan, then Bank can easily extend financial assistance to the village year after year and ultimately the actual farmers will be benefited. Branch Manager also told the Village Council & VDB that since selection of the beneficiaries were done by them and Bank has given loan on their recommendation, even for recovery, Bank will only approach the Village Authority and not the individual borrowers. He also encouraged the farmers to form Farmers’ Club which will work for the overall development of the village. He thanked the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha and Village Authority of both the villages for their support & cooperation and for making the program a success.
