AH&VS dept initiates backyard poultry farming

Sale on July 8 for farmers under Peren & Dimapur districts

Kohima, June 29 (MExN): With a view to ensure food security during the pandemic period, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH &VS) through NEC project has initiated promotion of backyard poultry farming in the State.

Fast growing birds are being reared in the Department farm to cater to the demand of poultry rearers, the department informed in a press release on June 29.

The current batch scheduled for sale on July 8 is targeted for poultry farmers under Peren and Dimapur districts, it stated.

Farmers who availed this facility during the earlier batch may also place their requirement so as to maintain continuity of activity, it added.

For stock booking, one may contact 7085982290 during the specified time from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on all working days.
Further, farmers from other districts have been informed to intimate their requirement, if any, in advance so that the department can plan accordingly. 

Demand-based delivery shall be organized, scheduling time and locality, and details of the same will be intimated to all concerned accordingly, the department informed.

Meanwhile, it also informed that the general specification of the birds include Fast Growing (FFG) Low Input Technology Bird for dual purpose (meat & egg type). Targeted weigh gain is 2.5 kgs to 3.5 kgs in 2-3 months time and 150-170 eggs in a year. Currently available stock includes Growers mixed colored birds of 31 days old, it stated.

All birds have been dully vaccinated and have overcome the critical period of rearing, it added.

The department also recommended concentrate feeding with ‘Grower Feed’ or partial replacement with kitchen leftover when rearing under intensive system for early maturity.

Online consultation services and need-based logistic support shall be provided, it informed while adding that during delivery and collection, all SOP protocols are to be maintained by all concerned.
