Kohima, September 23 (DIPR): The valedictory session of Cancer Awareness programme organised by the Department of Health & Family Welfare Nagaland in association with Apollo Gleneagles Hospital Kolkata was held at Japfu Hotel on September 22, 2011 in the late evening with Additional Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner, Alemtemshi Jamir IAS as the chief guest.
Speaking at the first of its kind cancer awareness in the State which is a long standing need of the people, Alemtemshi Jamir wondered how the rate of cancer patient has gone up to a juncture of 520 new cases in a year and requested the Doctors to ponder the cancer cases which can increase into a huge number in the years to come. In such cancer knowledgeable awareness programme, Jamir said that medical doctors, members of the civil societies, churches and the media can play a vital role to eradicate and prevent this alarming disease. He also stated that the lifestyle and eating habit is one of the most major causes to dictate the disease and today, Nagas are being boast of meat which is one of the scare commodities, therefore he called upon the people to change the eating habits and control the habit of consuming lavish meat to avoid cancer and diabetic to prevent this scare disease. He further lauded the Apollo team who had come with a big commercial term and for the health care of the Naga people who shown their concern during the exchange of joint venture.
Jamir beseeched the participants and the civil societies who had acquired more knowledge in this cancer awareness campaign to extend down creating awareness to the village level. In the fear of cancer and socio-economic problem, Additional Chief Secretary said that we need certain strategies policies which can be resolved and to be taken up how it can be prevented and put in to the 12 Five Years Plan. He urged the doctors that they should watch out wider developments extensive medical technology, which is made known to the world. Informing that the NSACS is spending about 20 crores in a year on HIV programme with the effort of the special Legislature Forum on HIV/AIDS, he wondered how the government should menace the cancer patients and said that he had talked with the Commissioner & Secretary Health & Family Welfare Menukhol John to try and see justice for the cancer patient. At one point of time, Jamir said Nagaland was in a little remote areas but in the next 5-10 years India Look East Policy opening a connectivity and strengthening in the relationship with South East Asian and expected the cheapest technology in the region specially in the health care. He also said that the North Eastern region needs good hospital for the benefit of the individuals as well as for the people of region.
Head of Department Surgical Oncology, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital Kolkata, Dr. Shaikat in his keynote address said that the Recovery and Discovery screening shows that cancer is assuming in all over India, which is a global issues. He said that lifestyle contributes 80-90 percent cancer, where smoking is the greatest risk factor in all. He added that 12% of the total deaths in the world are due to cancer. Dr. Shaikat further said that every year 10,00,000 breast cancer is detected and 12,00,000 lung cancer patient is detected in the world. He also said that 70-80 percent are detected cancers in late stages when the patient goes for treatment. Mentioning that about 27% cervical cancer patient are Indian women, he said that cervical cancer is one of the risk factor due to frequent sexual intercourses at an early age, multiple sex partner and having many children.
In the joint venture with the Government of Nagaland, Dr. Shaikat shows that Bi-monthly free oncology clinic at Kohima and Dimapur, partnership in upgrading cancer facilities, skill upgradation of medical fraternity of Government of Nagaland. Expressing that cancer is a benign tumour, malignant tumours and metastasis, he said that a person’s chance for a full recovery is better if cancer is dictated at the early stage. He also added that to avoid cancer, one needs to take care in the sunshine, obscure the health and safety regulations at work, eat plenty fresh fruits etc.
Nodal officer PBCR, NHK Dr. Tina Khamo highlighted the cancer scenario in Nagaland where he said that the total number of cancer registration from 2005 – 2008 is 792 out of which 492 are male and 300 female. She also projected that 29 % male and 8 % female cancer patients are caused by the used of tobacco during 2010. She also suggested to create more awareness programme, to have early detection facilities in all the hospitals, to provide counselling and Palliative care etc so as to get the remedies.
