The GPRN/NSCN formalised the appointment of Alezo Venuh as the Ato Kilonser on April 22 at its Council Headquarters, Khehoyi designated camp, a day after the National Tatar Hoho impeached N Kitovi Zhimomi in an Emergency session.

GPRN/NSCN Kilonser, Huvito Yepthomi, told a press conference, following the induction of Venuh, that the impeachment was compelled by “circumstances” in the backdrop of resentment among functionaries against Zhimomi’s leadership. According to him, it was a consensus decision of the organisation, including the GPRN/NSCN army setup, National Political Advisory Council, Advisor to the Collective Leadership, Cabinet and Kilonsers, which was approved by the President. He said that Venuh, who was the Special Envoy to the Collective Leadership and also held the position of Coordinator, Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs), took the ‘Oath of Allegiance,’ today.

The WC, NNPGs, a collective of 7 Naga Political Groups, has signed the Agreed Position with the Government of India in November 2017. The impeached Zhimomi was holding the position of Convenor of the WC, NNPGs. As a unit of the WC, NNPGs, the GPRN/NSCN it is not the prerogative of the GPRN/NSCN as to who will take the WC, NNPGs Convenor’s post.

C Singson, Advisor to the Collective Leadership, maintained that an organisation or government functions by established protocols based on consensus or collective decision. He maintained that the GPRN/NSCN was not happy to have taken the step and had made efforts to take “corrective measures” but Zhimomi was reluctant to listen. According to him, there was displeasure towards Zhimomi’s leadership. “When a leader loses leadership quality within the organisation, we are bound to change the leader for the betterment of the organisation,” he said.

He added that the GPRN/NSCN took the initial steps to form the WC, NNPGs. Zhimomi becoming the Convenor was a collective choice of all the leaders making up the WC, NNPGs, he said. Now that Zhimomi no longer holds the position of the General Secretary-cum-Ato Kilonser of the GPRN/NSCN, Singson said, “He may not have that opportunity to continue as Convenor.” He left the decision to elect the next Convenor to the WC, NNPGs.

Zhimomi was impeached on 4 grounds— alleged financial misappropriation, dictatorial functioning, incompetence and disinterest towards the GPRN/NSCN, which was upheld by the National Tatar Hoho at an Emergency Session on April 21.
