Dimapur, February 19 (MExN): An animal health camp was organized at Porba Village jointly by NRC on Mithun and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek on February 17. The camp was attended by many renowned scientists from other part of the country and distinguished farmers of the Kohima and Phek.
Dr. Naresh Prasad, Scientist (Extn.), NRC on Mithun in a press note stated that prominent scientists, including Dr. N. Balaraman Ex-Vice Chancellor, TANUVAS, Chennai, Dr. Ramesh Rawal, Vice president, BAIF, Dr. R.N. Goswami, Dean, College of Veterinary Sciences, AAU, Assam attended the camp and addressed the farmers. Dr. C. Rajkhowa, Director, NRCM, Jharnapani and all scientists of the institute and Subject Matter Specialists of KVK-Phek helped in conduction of the camp.
Villagers including the Chairman of the Village Council and members of the Village Development Board actively participated in the camp. Mithuns brought by the farmers were examined clinically and treated. They were also vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease. All calves were orally dewormed against parasitic conditions. Besides this turkey chicks and ducklings were also given to the farm women with the idea that rearing of these will help in meeting the protein requirement and improving their health.
During the camp visiting dignitaries expressed their views, Dr. Balaraman appreciated the efforts of the institute and KVK to improve socio-economic condition of the farmers by imparting training and other valuable input to the farmers. Dr. Rawal, was very impressed to see the local tribal culture and tradition and urged to preserve the tradition while making use of the advances in farming for a better livelihood. Dr. Rajkhowa suggested the farmers to make use the techniques developed by the institute and KVK for better and sustainable farming. Dr. Goswami invited the farmers to approach Veterinary College, Khanapara, Guwahati through the KVK for training on pig rearing and its management as it has excellent facilities in this respect. Dr. Zinyu, former Medical Director, Government of Nagaland, appreciated the efforts being made by different government agencies for the development of the farming community in the state. Aru Khate, progressive farmer from Kohima shared his experience with the farmers and explained them how the scientist from the Institutes have guided him to become a successful dairy farmer in the state. Zakamu, Chairman of the village council Porba, thanked to all the members for organizing the programme and providing an opportunity to learn. He also assured that the farmers will make the best use all the facilities extended to them.
