DIMAPUR, JANUARY 20 (MExN): Animal Welfare Forthnight (AWF) is celebrated every year to create awareness on animal welfare issues. Celebrated across India in the last two weeks of January, animal welfare groups organize various awareness events during the period.
2014 happened to be the golden jubilee year for the annual event; and Nagaland is also commemorating the reaching of the milestone.
On January 20, the department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry conducted an anti-rabies vaccination camp at Veterinary Hospital, Dimapur as part of the celebration. AWF had started on January 14 and will culminate on January 31. The event was graced by N. Hushili Sema, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur as the chief guest. Speaking at the event, the DC said that the primary aim of the vaccination camp and AWF is to inculcate the spirit of love and care for animals. Stating that the day’s initiative was taken up so that Nagas in general are made aware of the importance of caring for animals, the DC said, “Just as much as we love our children, we must love and care for animals too.” Further stating that rabies despite the progress made in medical science is still a frightening spectre, the DC hoped that the denizens avail the opportunity, at the same time inculcate the sense of love and care for not only one’s pets but all animal species, which are intrinsically linked to human growth.
Dr. Simon Ao, deputy director, Veterinary Hospital, said that as responsible citizens one should understand that welfare of animals is directly or indirectly linked to human welfare. Speaking on rabies, Dr. Ao said that rabies affect canines as badly as it does humans, while adding that anti-rabies vaccination must be encouraged.
It was further informed that Animal Welfare Society (Nagaland Chapter) will be reorganised with the election of new team of activists.
