ANTA submit memo to DC on private vehicles plying as taxis in Kohima

Kohima | June 8 : The All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) today submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Kohima, seeking his intervention and to check and take necessary action against those private registered vehicles running/plying as taxis in and around Kohima.
On the other hand, taxi services have been affected in and around Kohima during the period of submission of memorandum to DC Kohima by ANTA. However, the normal service resumed after the meeting.
ANTA Kohima headquarter president Vivor Miachieo told the media persons that the concerned authority basing on ANTA’s memorandum, has assured that it would take action against the defaulters and even to go to the extent of seizure of the permit.
Kohima SP who was also present at the meeting assured that it will check and take action against those private or government vehicles found parking at the designated parking lots of local taxis in Kohima.
Introduction of uniform for taxi drivers suggested
In the meeting, the DC also apprised the representative of RTO to organize a seminar for taxi drivers on traffics rules, politeness and tidiness of the vehicles.
Introduction of uniform for taxi drivers have also been suggested by the concerned authority.
Mentionably, the Association in its memorandum submitted to Deputy Commissioner expressed resentment against private registered vehicles running/plying as taxis in and around Kohima and inaction of the Regional Transport Officer, Kohima and sought the latter to check and take necessary action against those private vehicles.
The memorandum stated that the ANTA Kohima unit had earlier wrote to DC on March 16 this year highlighting the grievances faced by the local taxi drivers in Kohima on account of private registered vehicles plying as taxis “thereby snatches away the passengers and deprive the very livelihood of the taxi drivers and also to check the private registered vehicles running as taxis in Kohima Town”
It also recalled that the Extra Assistant Commissioner (TPT) Kohima wrote to the Regional Transport Officer (TRO) Kohima to check and take necessary action against private registered vehicles plying as taxis in Kohima town however, “till date nothing has been done by the RTO, Kohima as a result of which the number of private vehicles running as taxis have increased and caused unhealthy co-existence between the taxi drivers and the said private vehicles.”
The memorandum also stated that the once designated parking lots for local taxis in certain parts of Kohima Town were given way to private vehicles for parking and taking advantage of this, the private registered vehicles run as taxis without any hindrance for the reason that they can part anywhere and pick passenger anywhere whereas for the local taxis they were imposed fine wherever and whenever the traffic police see them picking or dropping passengers in the roadway. Therefore, it said, “the taxi drivers are facing problems of parking as well as to get passengers which badly affected their income.”
“That it is a principle of rule that without taxi permit and without payment of certain taxes, a vehicle cannot run as taxi and convey passengers hence, the plying of private registered vehicles as taxis should not and cannot be allowed,” the memorandum signed by ANTA Kohima headquarter president Vivor Miachieo and joint secretary Medo Keyie said.
Stating that the memorandum is “ just and proper,” the Association requested DC to check the private registered vehicles plying as taxis in and around Kohima within 15 days and publish notification in daily papers banning such vehicles to run as taxis and further publish the details of the defaulters in daily papers.
The Association also warned that it will resort to its own course of action if its demand is not considered.
Meanwhile, ANTA president regretted the inconvenience caused to the public where taxis go off the road for almost 3 hours today in attending the Association’s matter.
