The 70th General Conference of the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) commenced on January 13, with Lok Sabha MP Supongmeren attending the inaugural programme as the chief guest.

Held with the theme ‘Strengthening Horizons’, the three-day conference will conclude on January 15. A total of 1660 delegates representing various units of the AKM are attending the event, hosted at Chungtia Village in Mokokchung district.

Marking the formal beginning of the conference, the flag hoisting ceremony was conducted by Lanutoshi Aier, President, AKM. A drone show was also showcased with over 200 drones lighting the sky and displaying images and words, which perhaps could be first of its kind in the state.

In his inaugural address, MP Supongmeren said platforms like youth conferences should aim to produce responsible bureaucrats, leaders and officers, serving as a space where individuals mould themselves into leaders.

He emphasised the importance of cultivating a love for learning and developing the habit of acquiring knowledge. He urged the youth to explore themselves, understand their calling, realise their calibre and pursue goals accordingly.

The MP asserted that the Ao community does not lack ability or potential, noting that shortcomings often lie at the individual level, particularly in attitude and mindset.

Supongmeren concluded by urging the youth to remain determined and not allow setbacks to deter them from achieving their aspirations.

Limasunep Jamir, IPS, Special Secretary, Home Department and president, Ao Officers’ Telongjem also gave a short speech. He shared his lived experiences and urged the younger generation to adapt to a rapidly changing and increasingly transparent society.

He observed that the present generation is different from the past, with information and actions now visible to all, making it imperative to change mindsets.

He stressed that authority, wealth, and power hold value only when used in service of the community.

Limasunep highlighted the need for students to acknowledge and overcome their vulnerabilities, move away from dependence and complacency, and engage in self-introspection.

He also encouraged the youth to speak the truth fearlessly and build strong moral and ethical foundations. He further added that students should overcome fear, challenge vulnerabilities, and cultivate counter-cultural and counter-intuitive thinking to become responsible citizens.

The inaugural programme started with an opening act by the Chungtia Students’ Union, followed by welcome address delivered by Assamwati Longchar, Chairman, Chungtia Village Council.

A brief exhortation was delivered by Marsanen Imsong, President of Ao Senden while Ajit Kumar Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung and Nuheymong Yimkhuing, President of ENSF brought greetings.

The second day of the conference will be graced by Dr Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland.
