
Dimapur, September 11 (MExN): The environs of Shokhuvi became fully charged with the sound of pipes and drums on the evening of September 10 to the melodious reverberations of an hour long mass bands display of the Assam Rifles.
The bands showed their skills, musical talent and military discipline before a team of judges to vie for the Director General Assam Rifles Inter Sector Band Trophy.
‘Deshon ka Sartaj Bharat’, ‘Portree Bay’ and ‘I Love the Highlanders’ were some of the tunes played by the bands while following complicated drill formations of squares, circles and crosses which concluded with the Retreat.
The audience comprising of Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks and their families were left toe tapping even when the finale had concluded.
A total of nine bands have been camping in Sukhovi since September 8 and were tested for their marching skills, musical compositions, dress and turnout, and plying of individual instruments. 17 Assam Rifles band representing 10 Sector secured the first position and was presented the DGAR Inter Sector Band Trophy & Banner by Brigadier Vijay Singh, SM DIG, Commandant Assam Rifles Training Centre & School and 13 Assam Rifles representing 5 Sector was declared runners up.
Havildar I B Thapa of 11 Assam Rifles was adjudged the Best Bugler. Rifleman S M Subba of 1 Assam Rifles was adjudged the best Piper. Rifleman Tinumangyang of 39 Assam Rifles was adjudged the best Side Drummer. Havildar S B Thapa of 17 Assam Rifles was adjudged the best Bass Drummer and Havildar Umed Singh of 17 Assam Rifles was adjudged the Best Band Major.
