With a personality that’s ever pleasant and amiable. Intellectually refined, socially responsible, politically moderate, patriotically passionate and unmatched. In all sense of the term, true gentleman in the service of the Nation. Well bred and sufficiently educated yet exceedingly simplistic, generous, down to earth and a compassionate human being. Late. Ghukato Assumi, born of a noble lineage, groomed to carry the mantle of the family’s inheritance in service to the common mass as ever.
Insightful of his life’s prolific purposes, educationally groomed at the prestigious St. Anthony’s Shillong and Hindu University Delhi. Aftermath his graduation, Assumi being responsible in nature, dispensed his resourceful knowledge to the youngsters by embarking on the onerous task of teaching and later as Social Welfare Supervisor in the state’s department. However, responding to the call of the national liberation movement and to fill the much needed intellectual vacuum of the times, late Ghukato Assumi on his own volition and conviction renounced the luxury, comfort and safety of home.
Lucrative and assured prospective set aside, he chose to commit to the cause that provides none to self but consumes everything including one’s precious lives.
The calendar 1998 proved to be quite defining and eventful-the passion of his life “revolution” seized him and thus enrolled himself in the NSCN/GPRN. All productive and zestful years of life were devoted to the national service, joined the civil wing after completion of basic military course. During his 15 years of service, Assumi served the nation in various capacities- Home Secretary, MIP Secretary, Secretary PMO and Chief Secretary. On various occasions he also represented NSCN/GPRN in CFSB meetings.
His life’s testimony itself speaks of his works, achievements and selfless dedication to the noble cause which he has been promoting and which in turn elevated him to the most highly envied chair, the Chief Secretary, GPRN. With inherent human infirmity that makes or unmakes life, late Assumi surmounting the insurmountable reached the pinnacle of life and service. The youthful and soldierly chapter of his life thus exploited to the hilt with no remorse or stain.
The turbulent course of life well surpassed with landmark accomplishments and as the new route to prosperity were being charted, a new season of harvest and treasures of hard work about to be endowed .The sinister ghost of death in the form of human and with no mercy shown at the sight of defenceless and vulnerable soul- all alone, ignored the farewell bidding wife and children as late Assumi was just about to undertake another journey, another task.
Just stepped out of home and into his car, ignition keyed, from nowhere emerged the ghostly figures. The harbingers of death, spewing deadly steel slugs from Kalashnikov barrels mowed the leader down.
Yet unquenched of their blood thirst and to make sure their prey’s fallen, the predators closed in on the lifeless body, defiled the already death-still mortal with another rounds of hate propelled fury and perforated the remaining un-torn flesh. In the stillness of death silence the killers raided the victim’s car yet, the stunned passersby responded and jeered the killers undignified act of stealing even from the death. With nothing gained but vengeance exacted and rage discharged, walked away the killers in pursuit of another quarry.
Thus ended the colourful story and promising future of our dear leader and comrade Ghukato Assumi. Leaving behind an enviable legacy of “true patriotism” in speeches and actions, unfaltering in his dispensation of justice and fair play, ever forgiving, bears no malice against any, even the rivals admires his courage.
His sheer dedication to the cause for decade and half is ever transparent and clear as crystal, ethical of honorary national service, late Assumi’s immaterial testimony shall stand out for a long time to come as one “honest servant and leader”. Indeed! It would always be a shining example and a challenge to us, to reflect upon the pious ways of life which our leader has illustrated in life and in death.
I am only humbled to testify that not a single material possession worth identifying as assets, properties, securities etc ever found acquired. All he ever had were his precious children, loving wife and protocol dispensed necessities indispensible to the service.
Assumi’s unwavering love and loyalty to wife, profound love and concern for his sons and his doubtless integrity alone shall remain an inspiration and an oath upon which a new chapter of lives shall begin. And surely his only infant daughter have been deprived of the “ magic of love-to marvel in trance” at her dad’s handsome face, to grow up without father’s protective love. A wife’s refuge and the abode of her love forever shattered.
To his dad and mum, the eldest son has been snatched away, irreparable and irreplaceable, every conceived hopes and dreams that by nature a parent longs to share with the first and the eldest- out of their marital communion, a father’s pride that reassured his manhood, his long patient wait for the right moment to relinquish his patriarchal crown to his eldest son, to install him the head of the family. The mother’s first jewel to adorn her feminine humility, her first wonder and joy, breastfed and nurtured with her undivided and unconditional love.To his brothers, the torch bearer and path breaker of the family. The gallant intellectual warrior and compatriot, friend and hero to co-workers alike.Cut down by the hail of enemy’s bullets, Assumi now lies interred beneath the mortal soil. How fortunate were we to have encountered Assumi during his brief memorable sojourn.
May those who brutally took away the life of- the leader to followers, husband to wife, father to sons and daughter also feel the anguish of having lost the dearest one’s, that, they kill no more.
May the killers by their very act realise the futility of killing, may compassion and humanity dawn on them that no more precious lives be wasted in the quest of vengeance.
The Lord Almighty in all his mercy surely takes under his providence the family of the deceased, that bitterness be transformed to happiness, hatred to amity, vengeance to forgiveness and distress to hope.
Our earnest supplication to God to fill the emptiness with abundant love, that the deceased virtues of honesty, truthfulness, just and wise ways be imbibed by his sons and daughters, never a widowed wife or an orphaned children in God’s eye.
Left for a new home, no more would the mortal enemies harm him.
Life will never be the same again
Only your wise counsels and brotherly affection shall light my path until then...brother!!!
