Mokokchung, July 3 (MExN): Following the Assam-Nagaland border dispute which resurfaced in Tzürangkong under Mokokchung district, the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) on July 3, submitted a memorandum to the State Chief Minister, for his attention and immediate action on various points.

It stated that the Assam-Nagaland border disputes that occur from time to time has been in existence since the attainment of statehood which has hampered day to day life of many Nagas living in the border belt. Time and again, the cordial relationship between Assam and Nagaland could not be maintained over the years despite several undertakings and agreements signed between the two States, it added.

Drawing the CM’s attention to the recent incident at Tzürang valley, Mokokchung, the AKM said that, “Such highhandedness of Assam Police personnel remains an unexplained misery which is best known to the concerned.”

The Aosenden Village-Nagajangka Link Road at Tzürang valley has been closed since November 2020, it highlighted.

Due to the mentioned reasons, economic blockades, bandhs, agitations are inevitable, affecting daily commuters and leaving the citizens of Mokokchung district in jeopardy, it added.

It urged the State government to take immediate measures with the Assam government to withdraw the Assam Police personnel stationed at Tzürang valley, Mokokchung so as to do away with the ‘fear psychosis’ and tension among the general public and to safeguard ancestral land.

The AKM in its memorandum sought the CM’s action on the following points:

1. Dialogue with Assam government: The State government should initiate dialogue with the Assam government on priority and bring about a permanent settlement to the land disputes around the state to safeguard the heritage of our ancestral land, the AKM stated.

2. Appointment/Deployment of Village Guards in all border belt areas/villages: Over the years, the VGs have been playing a vital role in protecting our homeland from intruders in many districts, the AKM noted. However, uniformity is not being maintained in many areas, it observed. In this regard, the State government should initiate appointment of VGs in all the border belt areas, it said.

3. Foothill Road: the AKM acknowledged the effort of the State government towards the construction of Foothill Road. However, the purpose has not been served after a lapse of many years, it said and appealed for early completion of the Foothill road.

The AKM assured its unflinching support and cooperation in all possible aspects.
