Dimapur, July 6 (MExN): ATMA Chümoukedima block organized a field day on Okra (Bhendi) Var OH-597 provided under technology demonstration at Tenyiphe-I village on July 5 with Dr Tiatula Jamir, BTM, Chümoukedima Block as the resource speaker.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Tiatula informed that the variety OH-597 is a hybrid variety developed by Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR) Varanasi and released in the year 2012. She stated that the variety is dwarf to medium tall, with bushy and 2-3 lateral branches with dark green lustrous, shiny, slender, resistant to Yellow Vein Mosiac Virus(YVMV), easy for picking with first marketable pod attained at 45 days after sowing and having a yield potential of 120-150q/ha with proper field management.
Sharing her experience with the performance of the variety, Seyie Angami, member of the identified CIG, expressed that the variety performed very well under Dimapur condition giving good harvest. She informed that no viral infection was observed, however, infestation with okra fruit borer was recorded which, however, was effectively controlled by application of NSKE 5% at regular interval. She expressed confidence with the performance of the variety and further encouraged the farmers to take up this variety for cultivation.
During the programme, small tools and implements such as hand held hoes, khurpi and garden rake were distributed to all the participants. The programme ended with the harvesting of the crop. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Matsung Ao, ATM, Chümoukedima Block and vote of thanks pronounced by Chairperson, CIG. The programme was attended by the members of CIG, farmers from neighboring fields and ATMA functionaries.
