ATMA Kohima Block conducts demo on garlic cultivation

Launches SRI Farm School in Chedema 

Kohima, October 2 (MExN): ATMA Kohima Block conducted field demonstration on cultivation practice of garlic and launched a Farm School at Chedema on September 11 and 17 respectively. 

The demonstration was conducted by Rokotuono Phira, ATM where she highlighted that garlic can be grown starting from June to November in around Kohima region. She cited that garlic being a wide utility crop due to its various health benefits coupled with high demand in the market, she encouraged the farmers to promote garlic cultivation. The cultural operations to be followed throughout the growing season were taught to them in detail by the resource person. She shared the importance of nursery bed and how to sow lettuce seeds by preparing nursery bed. 

Later on, demonstration on cabbage was conducted by ATM Thejavinuo Mepfü-o. She explained the whole cultivation practices starting from selection of field till harvesting. Demonstration of seed sowing of cabbage was done in nursery bed nearby the main field. 

In a separate programme, ATMA Kohima Block launched a System of Rice Intensification (SRI) Farm School at Chedema. The programme was chaired by ATM, Thejavinuo Mepfü-o and the concept of farm school and the duties of farm school teacher were highlighted by ATM, Rokuotuono Phira. 

The Farm School Teacher, Mhalesetuo said that he newly adopted the SRI this year with the intervention of the Agriculture department. He also mentioned that the vegetative growth looks promising to give good yield. The resource person apprised the farmers on the kissan call Centre (KCC), its toll-free number and how they could effectively use it to their advantages in the farming activities whenever needed.
