Kohima, July 3 (MExN): ATMA Sechü-Zubza block conducted field day and demonstration programme at Khonoma on July 2.
The event was attended by the members of a Farmers’ Interest Group (FIG) from the village, along with Farmer’s Friend and ATMA functionaries. The programme involved harvesting of potatoes at a farm belonging to the adopted ‘Kevichi’ FIG of Khonoma village, followed by demonstration on nursery bed preparation of cabbage, carrot and coriander.
The programme was chaired by BTM Kajini Isabella Zinyü. ATM Thejavizonuo Kelio highlighted the objectives and roles of the FIGs and elucidated the purpose of conducting field day.
She also stated that with the present situation arising out of the COVID-19 outbreak and the importance being given to agriculture and food security during such times have given ample opportunities to local farmers to sell their produce on a wider scale and hence farmers should step up their pace and grab this opportunity.
A detailed hands-on demonstration on bed preparation was shown by ATM Ketsivino Nakhro, where a raised seed bed (1 meter wide and 15 cm high and of convenient length) according to the condition of the plot was prepared. The seeds were then sowed thinly in rows followed by mulching. The importance and advantages of nursery bed preparation were shared to the farmers.
They were also appraised on how raised beds are necessary to avoid problems of water logging, maintenance of spacing so that each seed/plant gets enough nutrients for growth and also helps in carrying out intercultural operations such as watering and weeding. The importance of mulching where it keeps the soil moisture contained, prevents weed growth and protects the seeds from excessive heat or rain were also highlighted.
