Bailey Baptist College (BBC), Wokha launched a foundation course in music on April 16. The inaugural programme was graced by Er Mhondamo Ovung, chairman of Lotha Hoho, while Rev Abemo Jungio, pastor of Wokha Town Baptist Church, dedicated the initiative.

Delivering the welcome address, acting principal Penthungo Lotha said, “the introduction of the course was driven by the growing need for music literacy, particularly as hymn books increasingly feature staff notation.” He noted that the programme is expected to lay a strong foundation for beginners while also creating opportunities for students who aspire to pursue music professionally.

To ensure quality training and certification, the college has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Milestone Music School, Dimapur, which is affiliated with Trinity College London.

“Through this collaboration, students will receive structured instruction, appear for graded examinations, and obtain certificates from a reputed international institution,” Ngullie informed.

The college has already made necessary preparations, including the procurement of instruments such as guitars, drums, and keyboards, and is set to commence its first batch within the year, with expectations of a positive response from students.

Speaking on the occasion, Er Mhondamo Ovung stressed the importance of identity and collective progress, observing that the community has yet to fully realise its potential. He expressed concern over the low enrolment in local colleges despite the availability of good infrastructure and faculty in Wokha district. Urging parents and students to prioritise education within the district, he highlighted “the need to reduce financial burdens while strengthening local institutions.”

He further underscored the importance of preserving language and identity, noting policy shifts that encourage the promotion of local and regional languages. Describing the introduction of the music course as a progressive step, he said, “It holds the potential to boost creativity and contribute to the growth of music and arts in the community.”

The programme featured a musical presentation by Dr Yanpothung Ezung, head of the Department of Sociology. An appreciation note was delivered by Dr Apeni Lotha, retired director of higher education and president of the governing body, who encouraged students to take pride in learning music. She remarked that music has always been an integral part of Naga society and that the course would help identify and nurture hidden talents. The programme was chaired by acting principal Penthungo Lotha, while vice principal Achumbeni Humtsoe delivered the vote of thanks.
