Bamboo shoot pickle processing training for SHG’s

DIMAPUR: A two day training programme on ‘Bamboo Shoot Pickle Processing’ for Self Help Groups, organized by the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency begin today at the Nagaland Fruits & Vegetable Processing Plant, Dimapur.

The chairman of the programme, Y.L. Thongtsar, member, Nagaland Bamboo Mission Implementation Team (NBM-IT) stated that the main aim of the training was to create awareness to the people of the potentialities of bamboo based business in Nagaland and also to equip them with necessary knowledge and skills. 

Altogether 30 participants took part in the training programme (Village Bamboo Development Committee, individual entrepreneurs who are interested in starting their own business and SHG’s).

Alem Longkumer, senior member of the Nagaland Bamboo Mission Implementation Team (NBM-IT) was the chief guest of the training programme. The resource persons were Achyut Bora and Meghalee Bora, the entrepreneurs of the Meghalee Food Product, Borbheta Assam.

The chief guest while addressing the trainees pointed out bamboo was the fastest growing plant, the cheapest and the most available in Nagaland. Keeping in view of the importance of bamboo which has vast scope for rapid economic development, the government of Nagaland was the first State in the country to formulate and notified bamboo policy stated Alem.

He stated that the government of Nagaland through the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) has focused to provide training to entrepreneurs both short term and intensive enterprise oriented training programme and also, the government has engaged in bamboo related activities, to create awareness, encourage, assist and undertake bamboo based trade or business or profession. He told that the agency would also act to explore and obtain fund assistance, grants, contributions and loan towards the development of bamboo and suggested that a separate fund could be created for formation and development of bamboo industries in the state. Bamboo shoot has been used as a vegetable in various forms since time immemorial but was confined to local market, which has limited the avenue for substantive income generation said the chief guest. He told the people to target at the wider markets which he believed that there is tremendous scope for bamboo products in this wide market. He also requested all the participants to take the opportunity to lean and earn. 

Achyut Bora, the proprietor and promoter of Meghalee Food Products, keeping in view of the availability of resources and potentialities in Nagaland and also the market demand for bamboo shoot in the world market told to capture the world market. Meghalee Bora pointed out that bamboo being a plant available all year would help the people if utilized in proper channel. She also taught the trainees, the techniques and the procedures of the processing of the bamboo shoot pickle in the technical session of the programme.
