To provide more information and updates on the upcoming Banana Festival, the Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, held a press conference at the DC Office, Wokha, on October 18.
Addressing the media, the DC informed that the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Wokha and various line departments, will be organising the Banana Festival from October 22 to 24 at the Public Ground, Wokha.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Kumar said that the Banana Festival is “not just a celebration,” but aims to create a platform to empower over 6000 farmers, connect buyers and sellers, and train farmers in scientific methods of cultivation and value addition. He expressed hope that Wokha will emerge not only as a hub for banana production but also for various other agricultural crops.
The DC further informed that the festival is being jointly organised by ICAR–KVK Wokha with support from various institutions including NABARD, Central Institute of Horticulture, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, and over 30 institutions from across the country and the state.
Sharing the highlights of the three-day event, he mentioned that over 100 stalls will be set up to showcase banana by-products, technical innovations in farming, and other exhibits. The festival will also feature technical sessions for farmers to interact with experts and dignitaries from different institutes.
In addition, activities such as banana-eating competitions and a “Best Banana Bunch” contest will be held to identify and promote the diverse banana varieties found in Wokha district.
The DC extended an invitation to the public to attend the festival, support local farmers, and make the event a grand success aimed at uplifting the farming community.
The event is part of the Five-Year Vision Document, launched earlier in the presence of Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh. The festival will be graced by Deputy Chief Minister, TR Zeliang as the special guest and Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton as the chief host.
