•-The directive of the department of Higher Education for compulsory opening of savings account by students for the purpose of crediting scholarship money into their respective accounts has created a tornado of mad rush in banks.
The idea of transacting scholarship through the bank account rather than cash payment is fine. And it is always good for everybody to open a bank account. But the real trouble here is the gravity of tension and desperation befalling parents and students as the opening of a new account has become a formidable struggle in the face of wild rush in the banks. Adding to the problem, some institutes are insisting on SBI account only.
Students skipping their classes and thronging the bank counters in uniforms jostling against the crowd to obtain a form and submitting has become a common scene. Even after submission of forms, account number does not come immediately in some branches. On the other side, students are hard-pressed for early submission of Scholarship forms. This situation brings mental stress and unrest on the students.
A workable suggestion here: a student should be given the option to mention own bank account number or parents or any family member and also not necessarily SBI account. Scholarship, in actual sense is the parents’ money being reimbursed, which implies free education for STs. Parents pay the fees and the money is repaid in the form of Scholarship. It is also the fact that students do not generally keep their account operative, and once the scholarship money is credited and withdrawn the account slips into dormancy. The department concerned may kindly consider these facts and issue notification/instructions in this matter.
