Celebrating Teachers' Day with the rest of the country, the Western Sümi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhakulu (WSBAK) held a programme this evening in honor of Western Sümi teachers at Chekiye Village Baptist Church.

Advisor, School Education, Government of Nagaland KT Sukhalu was the speaker during the occasion. Sharing a few thoughts to the congregation of teachers from in and around Dimapur, Sukhalu said that as per 2017 Government statistics of teachers in Nagaland, the Sümis have the highest number of teachers. However, we are trailing behind in the field of education, he commented while calling on the gathering to ponder on why it was so.

“Is it that the Sümis are only getting the salary and just not working?” Sukhalu questioned.

Exhorting the teachers to be mindful of their responsibilities, he said that if a teacher neglects the initial years of a student, one cannot rectify their later years in higher classes.

He went on to say that many will blame the government. But the government's job is to make policies, while the game changers for the generation are the teachers. “You are responsible for the foundation building. And if you cannot shoulder your responsibility, then we are doomed,” Sukhalu asserted.

Regretting that the Sümis are not co-operative, he said, and as long as the community remains that way, we can never outgrow our redundant habits and lifestyles.

The Advisor further encouraged the teachers to really start taking responsibility on character building of children and not just education, “because they are the future generation.” He believed that the teachers present here were all doing that.

While acknowledging his teachers, Sukhalu also said that he was not a brilliant student and passed in 3rd division in HSLC. However, God has always been kind and I've always gone further, not behind, he added.

Informing on the New Education Policy (NEP), he said that it has a lot of advantages, where different trainings will be imparted. He encouraged the teachers to attend the trainings without which they would lack the necessary skill to teach the students.

Further appreciating the proposed WSBAK Platinum College in commemoration of its 75th year, Sukhalu urged the WSBAK not to compromise on quality. “Or else even before beginning, the whole purpose will be defeated,” he cautioned.

Stating that a lot of fake news are being circulated on social media these days, he also discouraged the people on believing in social media regarding any news.

The programme was chaired by Kakheli Inato Jimo, Secretary, DoWM and N Suhuto Chishi, Secretary DoYM as the Secretary.

Reverend Dr Phughoto Sema, Executive Secretary, WSBAK gave the greetings and also gave a brief history and the vision of WSBAK.

Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) President, Shikaho Zhimomi and Western Sümi Kukami Hoho (WSKH) President, Vihuto Yepthomi also exhorted the congregation.
