Mokokchung, July 30 (MExN): SAKHI-One Stop Centre Mokokchung in partnership with Nagaland Police DEF Mokokchung observed World Day Against Trafficking in Persons under the theme ‘You can free me’ at New reserve DEF, Mokokchung on July 30.


“The objective behind organizing the programme is to tackle the ill practices of human trafficking against women and children which is prevailing in Naga society, to make aware of the people to be resilient towards the uprising problem, to be a change and an advocate to fight this problem,” Tumchobemo Yanthan, NPS Add SP, Nodal Officer of Sakhi-OSC, Mokokchung stated in his keynote address.

 


Wangshinaro Yaden, Center Administrator Sakhi-OSC elucidated on ‘Modern Day slavery-Human trafficking’ said that “Nagaland is in a crises cross highway of border areas where trafficking is prevalent.” The average age of trafficking victim is 12 years old, in which 80% of the victims are women and they are forced into prostitution or into pornography. Sex trafficking of boys is often hidden reflecting cultural taboos. Meanwhile 1% of human trafficking victims are ever rescued, and the victims rescued often come across mental trauma, physical abuse.

 


Moatemjen Panel Lawyer MDLSA highlighted on the Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Children Act 1956 (SITA), Immoral Traffic Prevention Amendment Bill 2006, He also stressed on the Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill 2018. He emphasized on the victim compensation, sexual exploitation, prostitution, force Marriage, labor exploitation and pornography.

 


Achila Pongen, OC Women Police Station, chaired the programme and took over the discussion hour. WV Patton, CJM & Secretary to MDLSA, Nodal Officer SAKHI-OSC also attended the programme.

 


The programme was attended by the district police officers, police personnel, and church members of the UNIT church.
