NPCB Chairman Rusovil John flagged off the bicycle rally at City Square Shopping Centre, Chümoukedima on December 2.
Dimapur, December 2 (MExN): The Environmental Information Awareness Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP), Nagaland Pollution Control Board organised a Bicycle Rally to create awareness and educate the general public on National Pollution Control Day, December 2.
Held under the theme ‘Pedal for clean environment,’ the rally began at City Square Shopping Centre, Chümoukedima and culminated at the Nagaland Pollution Control Board Office, Dimapur covering a distance of 16 kilometres. The route followed from City Square Shopping Centre, Chümoukedima – Purana Bazaar- Burma Camp – Hotel Tragopan Junction – City Tower – Holy Cross Junction – Dhobinalla Junction – Signal Point, Nagaland Pollution Control Board, according to a press release.
Cyclists from Gear Thrills Cycling Club, Eco Warriors and individual cyclists of 20 participants took part in the Bicycle rally, it said.
A short informal programme was held before the rally during which Limitsa S Sangtam, Scientist B, NPCB gave a short welcome speech. This was followed by a speech by Rusovil John, Chairman, NPCB who recalled the Bhopal gas tragedy which happened on December 2, 1984 and is regarded as one of the worst industrial environmental disasters in the history of India.
Highlighting the loss of lives and the impact of exposure to the gas, the Chairman emphasised the importance of taking preventive measures to protect the environment. The main objective of this day is to raise awareness about pollution control measures and the prevention of industrial disasters, he said while flagging off the rally.
The cyclists were received by K Hukato Chishi, Member Secretary, NPCB & EIACP Coordinator, at the Nagaland Pollution Control Boards’ office. Chishi also spoke on the occasion, emphasising on solid waste comprising plastic waste, C&D and E-waste management and stressed the importance of awareness in both the government and individual sectors.
A certificate of participation was given to all the participants and the rally ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Khriehunuo Rutsa, Programme Officer, EIACP NPCB, the release stated.
