Kohima, July 31 (DIPR): The Department of Health & Family Welfare (DHDW) and NOSSAL Institute of Global Health, University of Melbourne, Australia held a consultative meet on July 29 at the conference hall, Hotel Japfu Kohima.
Director, Family Welfare, Dr. Kumuni while highlighting on the health service delivery in the state, lamented that village-based birth attendants have not been technically trained, despite many deliveries taking place at home. She also pointed out that distribution of health units in the state was not as per population, going by the Government of India’s norms. She regretted the absence of any institute to shoulder the responsibility of sustainable capacity building and said that there is a need for an institute for strengthening our capacities. Stating the existing HMIS as unreliable and not very applicable for planning activities, she felt the need for on the spot data. Emphasizing on the basic requirements, she said that there is a need for development of strategic health service delivery system.
Commissioner & Secretary H&FW, Menukhol John who chaired the meet, informed that the visiting dignitary, Dr. Peter Duetschmann who is an Associate Professor and the Executive Director of NOSSAL Institute of Global Health University of Melbourne, Australia is also a specialist in the discipline of public health. He described Dr. Peter as a person who has keen interest in the area of public health service, particularly poor resource setting areas by creating multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing HIV/AIDS and other health issues. Taking maximum advantage of support system to develop sustainable programmes, strengthening community participation, development of a reliable HMIS and ensuring safe deliveries are some steps to achieve a proper health service delivery. The Health & Family Welfare official said that he would continue to work with the existing partners in Nagaland. He further said that his primary commitment would be to identify the need areas and to find a solution to the problems faced by Nagaland in the field of public health service. ‘We need district specific response and district specific planning for better results’, he opined. He also highlighted on the activities of NOSSAL institute.
Earlier, Project Manager NOSSAL Institute, India, Dr. Joyce Z Angami delivered the welcome address. The meeting was attended by host of officials from the department of H&FW from all over the state.
